Product Description

Manufacturer's Description

In Tom Clancy's Ghost Recon, war has broken out on the borders of Russia and the fate of the world hangs in the balance. That's when the call goes out for the Ghosts – an elite handful of specially trained U.S. Army Green Berets, armed with the latest technology and trained to use the deadliest weapons. Their mission: Spearhead the way for a NATO peacekeeping force, and keep the lid on the conflict before it mushrooms... literally.

Product Description

Ghost Recon puts the player in charge of a fictional squad of U.S. Special Forces operators. They are organized into three fireteams named using the NATO phonetic alphabet: Alpha, Bravo, and Charlie, with space for three soldiers per team (the Xbox and PlayStation 2 versions do not have a Charlie team available). However, only six soldiers can be selected per mission. The player enjoys limited tactical control on the battlefield by issuing maneuver commands and rules of engagement for each fireteam through a command map. The soldiers themselves are organized into four different character classes. Every class can carry a primary and secondary weapon, which are organized into "kits". Even though the primary weapon remains the same in all the kits (being defined by the soldier class - see below), there is a variety of equipment to be chosen as the secondary weapon. Rifleman: riflemen can use a variety of different weapon kits. Their primary weapon is the M16 assault rifle. Secondaries include the M203 grenade launcher, the M9 pistol, spare magazines, or a pair of binoculars (in later versions these were replaced with deployable sensors, since binoculars were supplied to all Ghosts). Support: provide a high volume of suppressive fire with the M249 Squad Automatic Weapon. As the soldier is equipped for short range, he also carries more armor. In addition to the machine gun, the support class may also carry the M9 (suppressed), M67 fragmentation grenades, or additional magazines. Demolitions ("Demo"): specialists in destroying large structures and can serve in the anti-tank role. Their primary weapon is the M4 carbine. This soldier can also be equipped with demolition charges, grenades, extra magazines, Claymore mines, or the M136 AT4 anti-tank missile. Sniper: the sniper can provide fire support over long ranges while hidden. Primarily equipped with the US Army's M24 rifle, they can also be equipped with the standard and silenced M9, extra magazines or grenades.

There are two editions of this most awesome XBox original title now. The original release hasn't significantly dropped in price but the 'XBox Classics' edition is just a little over half of the current price for the same product.
Watch out because each editions' reviews are displayed on the other's pages.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Tense one 27 Nov 2002
By Jive
Format:Video Game
Ghost Recon is in my view another top Xbox game for a number of reasons:
the game itself is true to the Tom Clancy style, a well aimed shot will take you down in one so stealth and tactics are a nessecity.
Single player: solo play offers 50 tasks to be completed, some of these are the missions themselves others are not given away immediately. The AI is excellent, the enemy will take cover, lie on the ground to shoot at you and some will even try to flank your squad.
The controls are effective and the ability to control a squad one rarely available in FPS.
The multiplayer is where its really at, whether split screen, system link or Xbox live the multiplayer is superb. There are various modes, Co-op, King of the Hill and a nice array of other team and solo games.
The graphics in Ghost Recon are ample and what is to be expected from an Xbox. The character models are particulalry nice.
Fans of games which require a thinking player will find Ghost Recon to be a sure winner. Especially when tensely watching an enemy soldier stroll into your sniper sights.
I gave it 5 stars due to its different gamestyle, anyone who charges in guns blazing will soon find out how not to play this game.
I personally recommend this to anyone who likes a slower style of game as a change to Unreal Championship and Halo.

5.0 out of 5 stars Man Down 10 Dec 2003
Format:Video Game
This is the full version of Tom Clancy's ghost recon, released on the new XBOX Claasics (read: budget) range. Which is a good thing - basically it means you're getting an excellent game for a cheap price.
Ghost Recon gives you control over 6 men and then puts you in a REALLY relistic environment. Theres no health packs, no speed ups and no lightning guns. Fighting back an army (through tons of missions) you unlock more men to choose from, extra weaponary and a cheat mode.
The game includes XBOX Live play and this can be tremendous fun and its proberly worth the game just for Live - but the single player mode is even better, its too good for words!
Controlling your men is simple. You bring up a map of the area, say what you want the men to do (recon etc) and the click where you want them to go. You can choose you own team players (from Snipers, Demolitions to standard machine gun types) and even choose what they carry. Not enougth? Well if planning there every move isnt enougth you can jump into them and take control of them fully in a FPS kinda view.
I really recommend this game (as do most sites, magazines and reviewers!) and give it the full 5 out of 5 - it really makes you feel like your in a war torn town, dodging bullets while rain hits muddy water at your feet. Enjoy!

5.0 out of 5 stars The Best XBox Game Around 17 Dec 2002
Format:Video Game
Tom Clancy's Ghost Recon is a superb tactical first person shooter. This game manages to hit all the right spots.
The graphics are superb and are exactly what you would expect from the XBox. Couple this to the awesome atmospherical sound effects in the game and you have the perfect combination. With a 5.1 surround sound system you could close your eyes and you would still know where you enemy was.
The gameplay is also superb. After a brief training session I had the control figured out, and the game is not too hard on it's easiest difficulty level so it won't put you off easily(though the game is not so easy that you can complete all the missions first time).
Also worth mentioning is that you can play this game in multiplayer mode using the XBox system link, and more significantly the XBox Live Service.
The XBox Live service currently requires a subscription fee (through a major credit card) and a Broadband internet connection. If you have both of these though, you'll be in gaming heaven. Team up with players from around the world, and stalk your enemies whilst relaying messages to each other through your communictor headsets. The game has a number of different multiplayer modes, and there's bound to be one that will suit most people's tastes.
This game is not Unreal Championship - rush in, guns blazing and you WILL die. Stalk your enemy using sneak tactics and you have a chance. This is a game of stealth and patience, if you think you will enjoy that then you will enjoy this game. 5/5

4.0 out of 5 stars Good mix of sqad and FPS action 9 July 2003
By A Customer
Format:Video Game
I enjoy playing this game in single player, but you really need Xbox live to get any sort of lifespan out of it. Don't be fooled by the 50 missions, they are just repeats of 20 basic missions, varying the difficulty or the gamestyle. In single player mode the game is quite short - but this is where Xbox live comes in to make this a game you will keep playing.
Single player is 3 stars but Ghost recon on Xbox live is 5 stars - although if you're new to it expect to get killed by the American players a lot. They've had it for longer and have that much more practice with the controls and the maps. To save some embarrassment you may want to complete the basic campaign and some special missions. This will also unlock better weapons for use in online matches.
One thing about the game that stands out from other FPS is the reliance on concealment and distance kills - in many online games you'd be better off with a sniper rifle rather than a heavy machine gun. In the single player game this can be annoying - your AI enemies are better at seeing you than the other way round. It can be helpful checking the map which will display enemies you can "see" as red circles even if you haven't spotted them on screen. Your AI squad are even better at this and often the first (and only) thing you'll know about enemy contact is a loud crack of a gun behind your ear and an AI squad mate shouting "scratch another one" or something equally macho.
