Fun:
I have just won my first game of Colonization, *ever*, and it is just as addictive as the first version (back in 1995!) - just a bit better designed. Mind you, it's still complicated even at the easiest level I was playing: you have to balance your economic development (through juggling resources) with an ever pushier king back in Europe, raising and raising your taxes. There are other colonizers, and locals who are not that pleased to see you come too close.

But it works better than before. The screens and play borrow some good points from Civilization IV (and it is a bit of a shock to see Montezuma or Huayna Capac from that game pop up on your screen here!); there are good overview screens to consult, and it is moderately easy to navigate through your buttons (with a few minor niggles); while all the interesting bits from the old game, from the European screen where you can hire experts, to the wagon trains with which you can transport your wood, ore, cotton and the like to and fro, to the improvements you can build in your towns in order to develop your industries, to the trading, to the slow building of a feeling that you want to set up your own country, away from all those taxes from the Motherland. You also know that the king will come with an army, if you do, so preparation is essential.

A complicated, turn-based trategy game. If you love Civ, you'll quite likely love this, too; I do. But it is not Civilization. It is much more linear than that, as you have one specific goal: Independence, and beating your former King's Royal Expeditionary Force he will send to punish you. I still prefer Civ, with its more open play, more victory possibilities; but I certainly like this one as much as I liked it back in '95, and I'll certainly keep playing it.
It never once crashed on my simple iMac (Intel) with Leopard on; it works smoothly. [later addition - now playing at slightly more complicated setting, clicking on a city screen or loading a waggon train takes a long time - is my system too simple for Colonization?]
I have to warn you, though, that it sucks up time like Civ does. I think it was the writer Iain Banks who said he had to remove it from his computer in order to keep writing books; but if you're in for some excellent escapism in the evenings, this beats television heads down!

Fun:
If you're a fan of any of Sid Meier's games then you'll enjoy Colonization. I'll start by saying it's probably not for everyone as it's a complex, turn based strategy game. If you enjoy something that takes some thought though you'll love it.

The learning curve isn't too steep as the game lets you figure out how to play as you go along and you can happily discover new game concepts yourself as you go along. The basic aim is to build up a colony that's strong enough to rebel against the home country. This is done through building, harvesting resources, trading with the home country and more complicated processes like religion, rebel sentiment and attracting founding fathers. Balancing these needs in your colony is the key to success and easier said than done.

The look and feel are the same as Civ IV (as the name implies), they're certainly pleasant, but that's not why you'll buy this game. You'll buy this game for hours and hours of addictive play.

Good Mac conversion 7 Feb 2010
Fun:
I had lot of fun on the oldschool version on Amiga. 15 years after, I switched to Mac and I waited for this game instead using any emulators. This is a great game. I still enjoy it.
