4.0 out of 5 stars Phew! NOT a stinker! 6 Sep 2012
Format:Kindle Edition|Amazon Verified Purchase
Having read a small amount of McAuley's short fiction (Little Machines) as well as some novels, I was intrigued by the description enough to warrant a 77p gamble. The plot conceit is a little like a cross between 'Them!', George RR Martin's 'The Sandkings' and any number of classic creature features of the 70s and 80s, but it's extremely well written, fast paced, character driven, almost un-put-downable in fact. It's saved from being a pastiche of the genre by the believability of its female leads and it's ability to allow the reader to suspend belief just long enough to reach the resolution.

5.0 out of 5 stars Wonderful. More please. 6 Feb 2013

Loved this, waiting hopefully for more. Loved the whole world building exercise, who are the Jackaroo? More to the point, what do they want? Brilliant. One of the best things I have read ( more than once) for ages.
