In City Slickers three middle-age buddies (Billy Crystal, Daniel Stern, Bruno Kirby) facing personal crises decide to sign up for a two-week cattle run for a change of pace. The trail proves a tougher place than anyone thought, and the boss (Jack Palance) is a grizzled taskmaster who doesn't cotton to tenderfoot urbanites. The film is both funny and moving, with Crystal giving one of his most complete performances and Palance (who won a Best Supporting Actor Oscar) a lot of colourful fun. Director Ron Underwood (Heart and Souls) subtly shifts the tone of the film from broad comedy to poignancy over its running time, and he makes the story's end a bittersweet victory that feels like life as most people know it. --Tom Keogh,

5.0 out of 5 stars Best good feel movie ever made! 19 Jun 2010
Whenever I'm asked which are my best ten movies of all time, which is a game often played with friends after a meal and several glasses of wine, City Slickers (not the sequel, which is awful!) is always the first I remember! It may be seen as cheesey by some people, it may be a little dated by today's standards, but the message within it's narrative and the story's execution is timeless. I defy anyone over forty not to see themselves within the characters and at the same time, after having seen the film, not to start questioning their own place in the world. This is a film that can be enjoyed by anyone, but the true message within the film can be really appreciated by those us of a certain age who get to a point in their lives and feel that maybe, just maybe, life has passed us by and the grass is greener elsewhere. This film will put everything in perspective, all you have to do, is discover what's the most important thing in life to you...wonderful!

5.0 out of 5 stars one of the most underrated movies ever 2 Jun 2004
city slickers is regarded as being a slapstick comedy about three guys who go to a ranch. its not. its a deeply meaningful movie about mid-life crisis and finding what is really important in life. for all movie buffs out there jake gyllenhaal actually had his first movie role in this film. city slickers should not be remembered solely as an average comedy but as a leading member of the feel-good genre worthy of a place beside stand by me and ferris bueller.

5.0 out of 5 stars A superb 'feel good' movie! 'Helloooo!' 4 April 2010
Format:DVD|Verified Purchase
Since the first day I saw this when it was released, I thought it was one of the best feel good movies ever made. The majority of us get bored with our day to day rituals, and crave to do something adventurous, say like a... cattle run holiday!
It's a great film with a brilliant sequel.

4.0 out of 5 stars Go and find your smile. 13 Sep 2011
By Spike Owen TOP 500 REVIEWER
City Slickers is directed by Ron Underwood and written by Lowell Ganz and Babaloo Mandel. It stars Billy Crystal, Bruno Kirby, Daniel Stern, Patricia Wettig, Helen Slater and Jack Palance. Music is by Marc Shaiman and cinematography by Dean Semler.

Mitch (Crystal), Phil (Stern) and Ed (Kirby), three everyday hard working guys going through a mid-life crisis. Choosing to go on a two week vacation to the Wild West where they will drive cattle from New Mexico to Colorado, the three men and an assortment of other vacationers meet Curly (Palance) who will teach them to become Cowboys. But the journey will not just see them learn the art of a cattle drive, it will be also be life affirming for a number of reasons.

The theme of a voyage of self discovery is hardly new to cinema, but immense credit goes to Underwood and his team for creating a funny, fresh and heart warming entry into the collection. Planting this out of place group into a Western setting, beautifully realised by Semler's photography (using actual New Mexico and Colorado locations), allows for much comedy and detailed character driven drama. The nods to classic Western films and TV shows is evident, but it's the about turn of watching normal tourist types attempt to emulate the likes of John Wayne et al that keeps the film from stagnating. The cliché's from some of those Westerns, the kind that these city folk would know only via the silver screen, come thick and fast, but with a great script to work from, the on form cast provide a true family winner of a picture.
