Book Description

13 Oct 2011

The pulse-pounding new thriller featuring FBI agent Franco Patrese, in New Orleans on the hunt for a warped serial killer as Hurricane Katrina threatens the city.

New Orleans, Summer 2005: New FBI agent Franco Patrese is intrigued when the attractive PA to the city’s richest man requests a secret meeting. She has information regarding an unthinkable conspiracy, and will trust no-one else.

The next day she’s dead – the victim of a bizarre ritual murder – and Patrese finds himself drawn into the murkiest of underworlds, piecing together connections between the city’s seediest players and her top officials.

Only two things remain certain – there are huge secrets hidden in these cesspools of corruption and crime, and some people will do anything to keep them that way.

And all the while, the city’s apocalypse looms. Her name is Katrina, and she’s taking aim…

• Daniel Blake makes New Orleans the setting for a story that's as hot, steamy and shot through with voodoo madness as the city itself. Highly recommended!" – Tom Cain, author of THE ACCIDENT MAN and DICTATOR

3.0 out of 5 stars Blow Hard 13 Nov 2011
By James I. Wilson VINE™ VOICE
Format:Paperback|Amazon Vine™ Review (What's this?)
I enjoy American crime fiction and this is what attracted me to this book. It is well written, moves with pace and has many suspensful passages. It is about a series of bizarre murders and their investigation by an FBI agent. It gives an excellentand atmospheric description of New Orleans (been there twice) and a moving account of Hurricane Katrina and its aftermath. However there is a big BUT. The basic motive for the murders is nonsense and there is no need for this. I don't want to go further as it would reveal too much. The identity of the murderer is also absurd and again there is no need for this. I say this as the basic story is excellent and a simple motive of greed would have fitted in seemlessly. It is worth reading however there is the big BUT!

3.0 out of 5 stars A strange little mystery... 18 Jun 2012
By Raven TOP 500 REVIEWER
Format:Paperback
Detective Frank Patrese is back in this cracking follow-up to `Soul Murder' which sees him uprooted from his beloved Pittsburgh to join a FBI unit in sultry New Orleans. I can honestly say that this is one of the most multi-faceted serial killer thrillers I have read including (takes a deep breath)....the Asian tsunami, body dismorphia, voodoo, ethnic cleansing, Mayan legends, Hurricane Katrina...oh...and a goodly amount of gory murders. I must admit that I felt the flimsy tsunami opener surplus to requirements and added nothing to the plot. One environmental disaster was plenty and the story would have been none the worse for its exclusion. Blake's depiction of the seedy underbelly and voodoo heritage of New Orleans was exceptionally well-drawn and equally, the tense build-up to Hurricane Katrina and its horrific aftermath showed a deftness of touch. I will also say that I have not read any crime novel that used the largely un-addressed issue of body dismorphia as a plot device and this was fascinating and worked well within the overall plot-line. On the subject of character this novel more than establishes Frank Patrese as a credible character with just the right degree of toughness, morality and vulnerability and this bodes well for future outings. Overall, although the central plot-line was a little far-fetched, I found this a good read with just the right amount of twists and turns to keep me hooked and I shall certainly pick up the next one...

5.0 out of 5 stars Another excellent book by Daniel Blake 17 Mar 2012
By David TOP 1000 REVIEWER VINE™ VOICE
Format:Paperback|Amazon Vine™ Review (What's this?)
City Of Sins is the second book by Daniel Blake. Like his previous book Soul Murder this book is set in New Orleans. The basic plot sees FBI agent Franco Patrese investigating the bizarre ritulastic murder of the PA to the city's richest men. What makes this killing even more intreaging is that only the day before she contacted Patrese requesting a secret meeting because she has information regarding a sinister conspiracy. Like Daniel Blake's previous book the plot mooves at a good pace with lots of twists and turns. The characters are nicely fleshed out and you can tell the author has a love for New Orleans - which makes a nice setting. So if you enjoy a good thriller then why not give City Of Sins a go.
