Description CITY RATS tells the stories of eight people going through their own personal crises, whose lives are connected in some way. In one scenario, a man prepares to throw himself off a building when he spots a fellow suicidal on an adjacent rooftop. United by their suffering, the pair realise that there must be another way out. A down-on-his-luck artist finds inspiration in the unlikeliest of places--the prostitute living next door--but winds up paying a high price for her cooperation. Elsewhere, a gay man leads his deaf-mute brother--who also happens to be gay--through the streets of Soho in an effort to help him lose his virginity. Danny Dyer (ADULTHOOD, THE FOOTBALL FACTORY) stars as a man whose shadowy past comes back to haunt him when the mother of an old friend approaches him for help in finding her missing son. The idea that all of human experience is somehow connected is beautifully illustrated by this bittersweet tale of hope, redemption, and the obstacles in between. City Rats is not quite the film I was expecting after seeing the DVD cover, but it is still a great independent British movie that works on so many levels.

The film follows a group of separate characters over the course of one day as they all come to terms with key moments in each of their lives (a wannabe suicide, a lonely prostitute, a man trying to escape his gangster background etc). The story lines are all very engaging, and the acting is first-rate throughout, especially from Danny Dyer who shines in a role that doesn't exactly show him in the most sympathetic light.

If you're in the mood for a fresh, thoughtful and intelligent new Brit-flick, this is the one for you...

AN INTELLIGENT FILM 1 May 2009
Format:DVD
If you are expecting The Business and want to sit back and be carried along then you would be disappointed - if however you are expecting an intelligent multi layered film that you have to think about and watch the threads come together or unwind with Danny and Tamar using method acting to a degree never seen before you will love it. If you are a fan of Danny Dyer or Tamar it will reinforce your opinion. Great, difficult, performances from Susan Lynch, Myanna Burring and Ray Panthaki. This is one you can watch several times to catch the detail you may have missed the first time round.

Pleasantly Surprised
I have to say that I really can't understand the amount of negative reviews for this film. I actually thought it was quite good and I'm quite critical of a lot of British films. Read more
