4.0 out of 5 stars Perfect for the City Witch 5 Mar 2013
By fiercekitty - Published on Amazon.com

Though I've been slow moving from chapter to chapter, I've found that City Magick is really the perfect book for a city witch like myself. With a new relocation to NYC, I realized this city, though its brilliance shines like a diamond, can have a dark underbelly that strips you of all your energy. This book gave me practical tips and small pocket rituals that I can take with me as I journey through the city. I've found a new love for NYC and feel revitalized walking the streets, instead of stripped of all my ability to connect. Perfect for a city kitty witch!

3.0 out of 5 stars Useful elements, but not aimed at the Practical Magician 27 Feb 2013

Penczak is clearly an expert in his field. Unfortunately, his field is magickal religion, rather than practical magick. If you are practicing magick solely as a religious effort, this book is a wonderful guide to doing so in the city. If, however, you are like myself and only seeking to augment your current spirituality with practical magick, you would do better to skim this book for useful segments and move along.

3.0 out of 5 stars About an average book. 29 Dec 2012

The concept of City Magic is becoming a fad lately, and that's pretty solidly what this book is: a fad book. That said, it isn't the worst I have seen on the subject. However, I did have a few issues with the book.

-If you have read up on paganism and you're just looking to explore a different path, you can easily skip the first few chapters. Its basically an intro to meditation with a few added tweaks to account for modern culture (using a guided meditation CD or drum machine... which I'm not sure if those really needed to be said.)
-"The difference between shamanism and psychosis is control." No. Penczak is not qualified to make this statement. I know quite a few people who would speak otherwise.
-The remainder of the book is a little bland.

He does have a section on creating sigils using graffiti that was interesting, as well as other methods of sigil-construct that were useful. Correspondences and substitutions for plants in spells that are commonly found in the city. Witchcraft on a budget.

A good book, not great. An awful lot of filler. I will keep it on my shelf for reference and recommend it to people who are interested in the subject, but definitely not a 'must-read.'
5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent Book! Someone not afraid to think outside the box 18 April 2013

I simply loved this book. It is great to read something that is outside the box. To many times, witchcraft books say the same things and can be often boring. This book is fresh and very exciting for city dwellers. I have lived in an urban setting all my life. I often wondered why modern witchcraft books never spoke much about urban magick. Most people living in a city have no time to travel hours to a secluded spot to perform magick under the moon light by a stream. Magick is everywhere; your apartment, your office, the hustle and bustle of the city. This book may not cover everything having to do with every aspect of urban magick, but it is a start and a book for the beginner/intermediate practitioner. A wealth of information. Great book!
