Amusing and endearing 13 Nov 2009
Format:Paperback
It is amazing to me that this book is so difficult to find, as it is one of the most touching memoirs I have ever read. Perhaps it is because I come from the places he describes (and particularly love and empathise with his descriptions of Crossgates Library!) that this book is such a treasure, but I think there is something far more endearing about it than being familiar with those places. Keith Waterhouse is one of those writers who manages to remember exactly his childhood view of the world and he doesn't gloss over the more eccentric aspects of his own character. He was a child who liked to 'stare' at things - whether it be the display in the window of artificial limbs shop or some particular person, he stared. Obviously, from his later writing, his staring led him to a deeper insight into what goes on in the world! His escapade during the eclipse sounds a little far-fetched but is humorous all the same and springs from the mind of such an imaginative child!

Just a brilliant book from an author who could have reached even greater heights!

To declare an interest, I'm from Leeds and have always liked a few of the Author's works.

A friend kindly recommended this and I thoroughly enjoyed it. That said, I share his same intimate knowledge of City Centre and areas he covers.

The book might not appeal to those who don't. So it could be a 'place thing' and perhaps also a 'time of life' thing. Lost youth and, to quote Houseman, Waterhouse appears to visit the happy highways where he went and cannot come again.

I doubt whether many of the current buying public have heard of him, let alone have any interest in reading this. Shame, it is good.

This is a fine memoir by a wonderful English writer, set in a Leeds before Harvey Nicks. It is exceptional - funny, moving, real and a valuable link to a vanishing world. Why oh why is it out of print? Buy copies wherever you can find them - you won't regret it
