Product Description

WOMANS WEEKLY
'A gripping thriller with many twists and turns.'

Review
'Ellory is a powerful talent, and this, his fourth novel, seems set to launch him into the stratosphere of crime writers.' (Mark Timlin INDEPENDENT ON SUNDAY )

'RJ Ellory has a keen understanding of rhythm and pace, knowing how to let a story unfold without too much interference. So there is a natural feel to the way the reader is drawn inextricably into the world he creates ... Excellent.' (Matthew Lewin THE GUARDIAN )

'A gripping thriller with many twists and turns.' (WOMANS WEEKLY )

'Ellory writes taut, muscular prose that at its best is almost poetic ... City of Lies is a tense and pacy thriller' (YORKSHIRE POST )

5.0 out of 5 stars ANOTHER TRULY EXCEPTIONAL BOOK!!, 3 Jun 2006
I don't know what it is about this author, but I've never read anything quite like it. Having been a committed fan since Candlemoth, I went through quite a rigmarole to secure an advance copy of this book. I'm not even going to admit how much I paid for it! It's something about the storyline, something about the writing style, most of all about the believability of the characters...all of them ordinary people finding themselves in extraordinary situations and dealing with it the way ordinary people would. Ellory doesn't stretch your suspended disbelief, but he never ceases to convey the emotional impact of what is happening with his people. I truly believe that his books are as good as they come, and I really hope that he breaks through and becomes a household name. All I can say is that all four of his books are stand-alone masterpieces. Doesn't matter which one you read, you'll want to read the other three. City of Lies would make a truly remarkable film, because the characters and the dialogue that make a great film are already there. I have already decided on the cast that could carry such a brilliant story and do it justice. All I can say is that Ellory is a writer bound for stardom...and it seems from his website (www.rogerjonellory.com) that he is doing it because he loves it and for no other reason. He deserves every ounce of success he might get, and I hope that success will come soon. All I have to say in closing is that I now have to wait another year or so for an Ellory book and that's just irritating beyond belief. There is little else that I've read this year that has even come close.

5.0 out of 5 stars Another superb read., 21 Jul 2007
By Danny "Word Addict" (Leicestershire) - See all my reviews
This review is from: City Of Lies (Paperback)
This is an author that continually astounds me, not only from the viewpoint of his writing, but also the diversity and scope of his stories. I've read everything he's done from Candlemoth forward, and it really is unfair to pigeonhole him with a 'crime fiction' label. It's not really crime fiction, but then it's one hell of a lot better than the vast majority of crime fiction on the market. In all honesty, there's so much more to this author's books that it's hard to classify them at all. Crime yes, but also relationships, real people, excellent dialogue, the most superb stories (and more often than not you get three or four or five stories brilliantly woven together as opposed to just one). I have read a lot (and I mean, a LOT!) of the standard successful best-selling type crime fiction, and this stuff is so far above the routine, so beyond the usual, that it's hard to put into words how much I recommend these books. Take a gamble, read one (any of them will do - Candlemoth, Ghostheart, A Quiet Vendetta (awesome!!) or this most recent one, City of Lies). Once you've read one you'll read all of them. Apparently there are some bound proofs of the new book - A Quiet Belief In Angels - floating about on the internet. E-bay here I go!

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent read!, 24 Mar 2008
By Big Bertha (UK) - See all my reviews
(TOP 1000 REVIEWER)
This review is from: City Of Lies (Paperback)
From the moment John Harper got the phone call summoning him back to New York and found out that his father, who he'd thought dead for the past 30 years was seriously ill in hospital following a shooting in a liquor store I was hooked.

As the storyline develops John uncovers a massive web of lies and deceit starting with the Aunt who brought him up and told him his father was dead, Uncle Walt his fathers business partner in the criminal underworld, the 'eye candy' Cathy Hollander. Which one should he believe? Where does the seemingly obsessed Detective Frank Duchaunak fit in to it all?

I enjoyed this one so much I didn't want to finish it.

A fabulous read and as already said it would make a fantastic movie!

Anyone who's considering an RJ Ellory book and not sure which one, they're all great, but I'd recommend this one or 'A Quiet Vendetta'
