Amazon.co.uk Review

This John Irvin film is a small, hard-edged little gem, full of crisp action and tough-minded codes of honour. Harvey Keitel stars as a retired professional criminal whose younger brother (Timothy Hutton) lures him to Los Angeles for a can't-miss heist in Palm Springs. But Hutton hasn't picked his other partners very well, particularly wheelman Stephen Dorff: when it's time to divvy up the spoils, Dorff kills Hutton and a fourth partner and tries to rub out Keitel. Keitel escapes, however, and trails Dorff back to L.A., where he also figures out which Chinese mob he's tied in with. It's strictly revenge time from there on out, with Keitel as the one-man wrecking crew cutting a bloody swathe through the L.A. underworld. Keitel is grittily good, a man of few words and many bullets, while Dorff is an enjoyably sleazy psychopath. A violently propulsive little film noir. --Marshall Fine, Amazon.com

I always like Harvey Keitel - and as the core of the ensemble piece he shines as well as ever in this film.

I also liked Wade Dominguez as the tragic mexican - this is a side of LA that u dont normally see and felt real - i could almost imagine myself walking the streets of the city.

The extras were good too - commentaries by various actors/actresses and the director - short but sweet.

An action film with little depth or sensitivity - the events drive the film and they happen fast and furious - it felt a little Chandleresque. Definitely a non hollywood sense to it.

...back to when thrillers were NOT just 90 minutes of bloody shootouts and car chases. Back when films still were GOOD.
CITY OF INDUSTRY owes much to its lead, the brilliant as always Harvey Keitel, who gibes another great and believable performance, and unlike most stereotype revenge films, his character actually is ALIVE.
Unfortunately this film never has received the attention and credit it deserved and remains more or less an insiders' recommendation.

For fans of Harvey Keitel and the revenge genre an absolute MUST SEE.

Dark and determined 20 Oct 2000
By Hessu
Format:VHS Tape
Harvey Keitel plays an excellent role here. He is a determined criminal who wants to get his job done, no matter what price. The movie is an analysis of this determination. Although it is a dark film about robbing and killing, it is also a chatharctic story of loyalty and yearning. If you liked the film Bad Lieutenant by Abel Ferrera, most likely you will be interested in seeing The City of Industry. Yes, I know, the Ferrera movie is ART, and City of Industry belongs to the category of ACTION. But there are similarities between the two: they are both about human action in desperation.
