Product Description

Amazon Review

Three very different women face heartache, dislocation and despair in this up-to-date, romantic saga, which praises the power of friendship to pull you through.

At 21, Dishy Devlin is seduced by the suave, sophisticated Colin Cantrell-King, an older married man and her boss. When she finds herself in an unfortunate condition for an unmarried, Irish Catholic girl, she faces some very hard choices. What will she decide?

Overly-curvy Caroline is afraid of being left on the shelf so jumps at the chance to marry the cool, detached and very attractive Richard. But, why does he never return her ardour with equal passion? And why is his friend Charles Stokes so upset when he hears about their engagement?

Married mother Maggie feels trapped in a loveless marriage until she discovers her husband's infidelity. Suddenly, she feels released but what will she do with her new-found sense of liberation?

City Girl successfully threads together the interweaving tales of these three best friends who, whilst each making a journey of self-discovery, come to appreciate that the bond they share is what gives them their strength:

"To the most important thing that anyone, rich or poor, can possess. And that we are richly blessed with ... To friendship"
Patricia Scanlan's style and subject is more akin to a young Maeve Binchy than the plethora of young female novelists, such as Helen Fielding or Jane Green, who use their works of fiction to relate their own personal angst. Scanlan's narrative is rich in intrigue, deception and traditional romance. --Nicola Perry --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

5.0 out of 5 stars Super book - couldn't put it down 28 Dec 1999
By A Customer
Format:Paperback
I only borrowed this book from my wife when I had run out of reading material in Tenerife, but I'm so glad I did. It turned out to be a super story, following the fortunes (and misfortunes) of three women in modern-day Ireland. I found it difficult to put down, and am now half way through devouring the sequel "City Women."

4.0 out of 5 stars First in trilogy 4 Sep 2012
By jg
Format:Paperback
Good read & it's the first book in a series so if you enjoy it you are bound to want to read the others.
I only read this recently & I did note that it is starting to feel a bit of date. Not really surprising when you realise when it was published & how technology has advanced since then (mobile phones for a start).
However, this didn't spoil my enjoyment of the book & I have the second installment (bought as used via Amazon) ready to go!

5.0 out of 5 stars City life! 6 Nov 2011
Format:Paperback
A fan of Irish writers, I particularly enjoy Patricia Scanlan as a natural storyteller. Her books are exciting and very easy to read. City Girl is one of my favourties and I really felt that I got to know the three characters, Davlin, Caroline and Maggie very well as the book progressed. I an now a devoted fan of Scanlan and have read all her books. Wonderful!

I like most of Scanlan's books but I admit I didn't get into this one. It was very slow and at times very boring. I disliked Devlin and Caroline. Read more
