Another masterpiece from The Wave Pictures. No over-engineering here; these guys play real instruments and they play them superbly. David Tattersall's lyrics are a wonder to behold and the band are so tight. Go and see them live while they're still playing at small venues; you won't regret it. They deserve to be massive.

I am split down the middle when it comes to decide what to think of Wave Pictures and this album of soft/alternative rock, as half of the songs are really good, but the other half are quite bad.
On the bad side, there are a fair proportion of tunes that are a little too repetetive, or too lightweight for my liking (perhaps it's cos I'm a rocker! ). The track Narrow Lane would've been okay if it was'nt for that annoying saxophone. Also, quite a few of the songs tend to have the same old tempo, and the singer, although well suited for the kind of music the band play, can sound a bit weedy.
For the good points; it is the more rock guitar orientated tracks with the solos in them that I prefer. All My Friends ends with a cracking solo that you seldom hear on modern rock recordings these days. All lyrics are clearly audible; something that is unusual in rock and pop. "They haven't got a f---ing clue" is clearly heard on Tropic.
I think City Forgiveness would have been a much better album if it was a single, rather than a double CD, then perhaps they could have omitted some of the weaker tracks.

Brilliant. Lo-fi because they don't need fancy production, quite poppy simply because the song writing is so clever, a bit scuzzy because they have some DIRTY guitar licks. And normally I'd use 'feel-good' as an insult, but this filler-free double album really does make you feel good, tap your feet, sing along. The lyrics veer between inspired ('Somewhere, a whistling kettle / I meet the world, and the world is a stinging nettle') and the frankly silly but sweet and well observed ('You make me feel like dancing / naked across the motel room / my beer belly bouncing in the afternoon') but generally they're just bloody good.

And go see them live! They're pretty much the best around.

Great Wave Pics album and there are 2 discs so you can't go wrong there. Superb lyrics as always (I like 'Golden Syrup' especially for this reason). There are at least 9-10 songs that are absolute winners and could be released as singles in my opinion and I've had them on repeat over and over. Very much a feel-good album and ends on a really poignant song which was made even more special as I heard them play it live and we all had a sing a long to it. BUY!

We saw The Wave Pictures after hearing 'Into the woods' on Mark Riley's Radio 6 show. Their live performance was outstanding, humorous and versatile. This album captures their obvious enjoyment of playing original songs to a very high standard. I would recommend this musical treat to anyone with a sense of musical adventure;exciting times.
