Product Description

Major Bhaajan returns to the desolate, sand-swept world of her rough-edged childhood because her detective skills have earned her a lucrative assignment: find a runaway son of the ruling dynasty. Forays into Raylicon's Underworld, treachery, encounters with gangsters and an old flame are just some of the challenges facing Major Bhaajan in pursuit of the missing aristocrat. "The City of Cries" novella is included in the 2011 WindyCon collection of Catherine Asaro's writings called AURORA IN FOUR VOICES

"Asaro's Skolian saga is ... in many ways as compelling as DUNE, if not more so."
- Booklist

"Readers seeking the harmonious meld of hard SF's rigor and human chemistry's heat should read Catherine Asaro's fiction."
- SciFi Weekly

"Asaro's portrait of interstellar intrigue, weird socio-political customs and galactic history has come to approach the neighborhood of such classics as Frank Herbert's DUNE series."

on the Skolian Empire series:
"One of the major series in the genre."
- SF Chronicle

Catherine Asaro is a Nebula Award winner for her novel The Quantum Rose, part of her popular Skolian Empire series, and the novella “The Spacetime Pool.” Her novels have three times been named the best science fiction novel of the year by Romantic Times Book Club. Asaro short fiction on Skolian empire perfect for Kindle 27 Feb 2012

Author Asaro has written at length on the Skolian Empire. However, while it is easy to find full books, the shorter pieces -- novelas and short stories -- are often in hard-to-find back copies of SciFi magazines or scattered across collections of short stories. "The City of Cries" is the first of these shorter works that I have seen offered in an e-version for Kindle and I was glad to find it. Hope more of her classic stories will become Kindle-accessible. Reviewing content: hard-boiled interplanetary detective solving a mysterious disappearance from the aristocratic House of Majda -- what's not to like in this gender-reversed Skolian setting, except it's too short LOL.

Unfortunately Forgetable and Overpriced 29 Jan 2012
By Harmony - Published on Amazon.com

It has only been a week since I read the story, but I had to look up the main characters name for this review. The main story revolves around Major Bhaajan's search for a missing Mahja prince. As a detective story it is too brief to be interesting. The romance also seams to happen at a fast pace with a bare minimum of buildup. The science fiction aspects would probably be more interesting to readers new to the series, but to those familiar with the Skolian Universe it is just old hat. There are no appearances by any of the Ruby dynasty, they are just background politics in this book.

Speaking as someone who has read the entire series, I was disappointed, I don't know what makes some characters stand out and others fade back but this story just fell flat for me.

A novella this short should probably be priced cheaper than $3.99
