Product Description

Fantasy Romance Epic.

The city is crumbling beneath a mountain of its own indulgences. Its army abuse the castle's servants, confident that deadly wielders have been exterminated; wars are fought to encourage otherwise absent mortality; countless people suffer from the terrible pangs of nalka, the hunger for intimacy; and all the while its king concerns himself with choosing which of his disappointing concubines to execute next. The duty falls upon his emotionally withdrawn son, Morghiad, to restore the city's strength and the army's purpose. In his attempts to do so, he uncovers darker horrors and encounters a young servant who could either be his greatest ally or his greatest hindrance.

City of Blaze is a story of changing allegiances, self-control and love.

5.0 out of 5 stars Exciting new fantasy novel 3 July 2011
By Matrimm
Format:Kindle Edition
I received a copy of this book from the author to review from a fantasy forum.

The characters and fantasy world were both fresh and exciting to read about and the story kept me coming back for more. It is certainly better than several of the new books I have read in the genre, which seem to be following the route of multiple POVs over and over again. This one has a few POVs but keeps them to a limited number.

I think the only problem with this book is that the intro gives the misleading impression of developing a cheesy/hackneyed story, which doesn't reflect the rest of the book.

I can thoroughly recommend it and hopefully there will be a sequel!

5.0 out of 5 stars Brilliant fantasy novel 13 Jun 2012
Format:Kindle Edition|Amazon Verified Purchase
A friend recommended this book and I am very grateful she did. From the beginning, it was intriguing. There is just enough fantasy to make it interesting but not so much that I felt overwhelmed. The characters are well developed and there is excitement, suspense, romance, interesting society ideas, and everything else you would want in a book. I really can't wait to start the second book in the trilogy and I have bought both of the remaining books already.

This is such a good read and for a free download, I think it's amazing.

FROM MY 12-YEAR OLD DAUGHTER:
I enjoyed the book because it was very imaginative and I couldn't put it down. I loved the characters and felt that I could connect with them. I also read the other 2 books in the series and can't wait for the new ones to come out. I definitely recommend this book to anyone from age 12 upwards.

5.0 out of 5 stars A book I found hard to put down 4 Jan 2012
By Ali
Format:Kindle Edition|Amazon Verified Purchase
This book was very hard to put down. The storyline and characters were captivating and left me reading into the small hours of the morning. It had magic, romance, heroes and heronies, battles and everything I like in a story. It was quick to get into and kept my interest the whole way through which is good for me as I can find it hard to read more than the first chapter if the story hasn't caught me from the off.

I started reading fantasy books a couple of years ago but find it hard to find books I like as I'm not such a fan of vampires, elves, trolls etc. This did have supernatural beings with exceptionally long lives or reincarnation but they were certainly human like enough for me to thoroughly enjoy the book.

Having found that I had read every book written by the authors already on my reading list none of the books recommended to me really appealled so I found myself searching hard for a book by a different author that I might like. This book was among my favourite fantasy books to date and I am definitely adding the author to my reading list and will now be buying the next one.

3.0 out of 5 stars Slow starter but improves 26 Nov 2012
Format:Kindle Edition|Amazon Verified Purchase
I must confess, I find myself a little horrified to be giving this book 3* as I genuinely was enjoying it by the time I got two thirds of the way through. I liked the characters, particularly Artemi. She made me laugh out loud several times with her impertinence. I also liked Morghaid. There was a peculiar sort of wisdom to his character when it comes to suppressing emotions and yet when it crumbled around him it made him seem so much more human.

I like the twists in the book and I admit to being upset at the end. I will certainly be getting the next book in the series to find out what happened.

So why the 3* and not 4 or 5? Because it took me most of the book to figure out the meaning of several of the terms. I got to the end of the book without really understanding what "nalka" is. I don't know if this is part of a wider series of books by this author or if s/he just made the mistake of assuming that nothing needed to be explained, but it was incredibly off-putting. I didn't have a clue who anyone was or what was going on until I'd persisted with a substantial chunk of the book. It was very confusing, not really understanding who anyone was, where they were coming from, or what the relationships between them were. Benay-gosa are mentioned quite early on and yet I didn't have a clue what they were until about halfway through. There are also several references to the length of time it takes to produce children which also aren't explained until most of the way through which make the early parts of the book a little odd. There is a glossary of terms but it's at the end of the book. As I downloaded it as an e-book, I didn't know about it until I'd already finished.

I was also a thrown several times by the passage of time in the narration.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great fantasy epic 27 July 2012
Format:Kindle Edition|Amazon Verified Purchase
Having just finished 'City of Blaze', I thought I'd see if there were more books by H.O.Charles. I'm pleased to see that there are 3 books in this series (so far) and I'm just about to download them to my kindle.

City of Blaze is a fantasy novel which is easy to read and hard to put down. It contains hero's and heroines, battles, intrigue, suspense and the end leaves you crying out to find out what happens next!

This is the first book I have read by this author, but I will be looking for more of his work after I've finished the next 2 books in this series. This was a free download, but one of the better written free books I've read. I am more than willing to pay to read the rest.
