Methinks Mr Macintyre has been listening to some of the early 80's Scottish "jangly" Scottish bands like Orange Juice, Deacon Blue, Bluebells and maybe early Teenage Fanclub. Nothing wrong with that of course, they produced some of the sweetest pop music of the past 40 years and this album deserves to be up there with the best. My one caveat would be that, much like the afore mentioned bands to be honest, the vocals may be a touch strained on the uptempo numbers. Don't get me wrong, the guy can sing and on the more mellow "fold out city" this is proved to great effect, so I may be a tad harsh here but the songs themselves are bright, catchy and witty so well worth listening to.

I like The Lights! 10 Mar 2012
Format:Audio CD|Amazon Verified Purchase
I have to say that when you hear something on the radio which pricks your ears and your curiosity - especially whens it's some one you've never heard of - I'm tempted, and all too often dissappointed, when I go all out, get the album and find that the single I heard was the only decent track! (done that a few times eh?!)

However, on this occaision I was pleasantly surprised. Not only is 'The Lights' my single of the year, but the whole album (City Awakenings) is great too. I so wanted more of that sound and & with this album you get it, song after song. I love the balance of raw guitars, great sounding drums, sweet vocals and crisp recording & production which you get with Colin's songwriting on this CD. I love the whole Mull Historical Society cover too. The fact that it sounds like a band but which is really a great Scottish songwrter with an impressive back catalogue, I hope he goes from strength to strength. And with The Lights on the Radio 2 playlist I'm sure he will. Very reccommended listening.

First heard this on Radio 2 - couple of tracks - and decided to buy it hoping that the rest of the album would be as good. Wasn't disappointed, this really is a fantastic album. Plus, the added benefit of telling friends about the Mull Historical Society you look super-trendy because they have never even heard of the band ...
