This album has been a puzzle to me... One or two tracks earworm into my mind, like New Years Day, and one track in particular makes me want to sing and join in, which is Strings (stand out track on album). But when you look at the album overall, the tendency is to be too friendly with the next button on the car stereo player, which is never a good sign.
I agree with the last reviewer's comments about Blonde Redhead and Maps... there is an originality about these band's music that Asobi Seksu does not really achieve, who instead comes across as too retro at times. Why would I want to listen to an almost carbon copy of a MBV song, when I can listen to MBV, who will always remain the yard stick? Also, compare the production on BR's 23 for instance with the production on Citrus, to find what is possible, al a shoegazing.
There are some clever ideas on the album, great song structures and wonderful moments, but the direction of the production gives the impression that you are listening to a school girl without balls, lost in the past, and tinkering at the edges of what could have been acheived commercially. Yuki has a very distinctive voice, a wonderful gift for melody, and the band a talent that I am sure will shine much brighter in future work... maybe with the help of Alan Moulder!
