Get Connected--Stay in Synch with the Perfect Partnership--Citizen Eco-Drive Proximity

If you're an Apple fan, you will really appreciate the latest Citizen Eco-Drive Watch: Proximity.

This timepiece is loaded with all of the features you would expect from the Watch Brand of the Year Winner; a perpetual calendar, 60 minute chronograph, 12/24 hour indication, second time zone, power reserve indicator and, being 100 metres water resistant ensures it can really be put through its paces.

Thanks to technological advances, there are also some truly unique additional features to this watch which make it stand out from the crowd:

  • Downloading the watch's application, allows you to connect it to your iPhone 4s/5 through Bluetooth 4.0 Low Energy sync. Immediately activating the Automatic Date and Time Synchronisation features ensuring that no matter how often you change time zones, the watch is kept to perfect time through connection with your phone.
  • If you've ever lost your iPhone 4s/5, you'll understand that sinking feeling of having to retrace your steps to find it – no longer will you need to do this once you own a Proximity watch. Thanks to the watch find feature. Simply activate the function on your watch and your phone will ring so that you can be reunited with it, even if it's on silent. Furthermore, should you forget your phone; Proximity will discretely vibrate to alert you that the Bluetooth connection is broken and that you've left your phone behind.
  • Waiting for an important email but have to attend a meeting? You can stay close to your inbox with Proximity. Your watch will quietly alert you using the same discrete vibration, the second hand automatically sweeping to point at various icons on the dial ring, so you can see whether you have an incoming call, email or calendar entry.

Mark Robinson, Brand Director for Citizen Watch UK, said "We are extremely proud to be the first watch brand in the UK to utilise technologies with our Proximity Watch Collection. Eco-Drive Frequently Asked Questions

See the full Citizen Eco-Drive FAQ here

How can you tell if the Eco-Drive watch is getting enough light?
In normal use, the watch displays the time and the sweep-second hand moves in one second intervals. A very important feature of Eco-Drive is the Low Charge Warning Mode which as a result of low battery voltage, causes the second hand to jump two seconds at a time (while still keeping correct time).

How long will an Eco-Drive watch run after it is fully charged?
If your watch is put away where no light is available to it while in a fully charged state, depending on the model, it will run for from 45 days to 5 years.

How can the Eco-Drive watch be recharged?
Besides sunlight, it can be safely charged by exposing it to a fluorescent desk lamp, with the dial (face) up and within about 8 inches or an incandescent lamp (regular light bulb) no closer than 20 inches. Never use a halogen lamp since the heat generated by it can cause damage to your watch. The most efficient and the quickest is in direct bright sunlight (not windowsill) and never on the dashboard of a car.

The Citizen Eco-Drive Proximity watch is a very attractive, high-quality analogue-display timepiece that you will be proud to own. Even without the iPhone integration, it is a nice watch to have on your wrist. It approaches phone integration at a different angle from, say, the electronic Pebble watch. The Pebble, in common with several others about to be launched, is a digital display device built primarily as a wrist terminal for the phone. It will be possible to provide more detailed information on the small e-ink screen of the Pebble. The Citizen, on the other hand, is the first conventional, analogue-display watch to link with the iPhone and remains a rather odd mix of electronics and dials and pointers.

There is a lot of information displayed on the dial and, as I mentioned at the outset, the tiny blue on black lettering is difficult to read. The hour and minute hands frequently cover the particular part of the function or mode dial that you need to consult. It is a cluttered display, typical of Citizen multi-function watches over the years, and will be frustrating for anyone with less than perfect eyesight. It isn't all that good for people with good eyesight, come to think of it.

The time synchronisation with the iPhone is faultless and the watch is a buy on this function alone. With two time zones and integration with the iPhone's over-the-air time sync, the watch is likely to be an ideal travelling companion. Old-style mechanical time-zone watches such as the Rolex GMT Master II require manual setting and adjustment. However, the display on the Rolex, for instance, is far clearer and simpler than Citizen has managed to achieve.

The alerts are a mixed bag.

Clearly a watch for the iPhone aficionado, but I have already been disappointed by the dial design. It's really hard to read the subsidiary dials with a black background. Additionally, the iPhone functions are incredibly hard to read. That said, it's a stylish and substantial timepiece.

The solar power charging seems to work very well, though ultimately limits the viability of the watch. With no cell to replace, once the solar recharging fails, then so does the watch. I'm guessing a Citizen repair would not be financially viable. Given the high purchase price, this probably limits its viability to 5-8 years only.

The usefulness of the iOS integration is open to debate. In my experience, the watch often loses connectivity with the iPhone, even though only placed feet apart. Re-connection is fiddly and after a few days, you resort to using this as a stand-alone timepiece, only occasionally re-connected to sync the watch with the time server. I'm baffled the interface doesn't alert you to text messages, whereas alerting you to every email on a busy account seems practically pointless.

The watch vibration alert is very subtle and easy to miss; but at least this means receipt of alerts is very discreet.

The necessary third party iOS app needs to be running in the background for any alert or sync to function. The Bluetooth connectivity is a fair drain on your device's battery - which is quite a substantial drawback.

All in all, a solid timepiece with a hard-to-read dial. The iOS functions are more a gimmick and a talking point than any practical use. A worthy gift for a gimmick/gadget fan, but an otherwise impractical and overpriced piece of redundant metal!

Bought this for my Son's 18th Birthday. Its gorgeous and he loves it. Great gimmick links to the iPhone for vibrations when messages arrive etc. Great....BUT....I think this kind of watch will be killed by Apple's iWatch when it arrives.
