The Citizen Eco-Drive Proximity watch is a very attractive, high-quality analogue-display timepiece that you will be proud to own. Even without the iPhone integration, it is a nice watch to have on your wrist. It approaches phone integration at a different angle from, say, the electronic Pebble watch. The Pebble, in common with several others about to be launched, is a digital display device built primarily as a wrist terminal for the phone. It will be possible to provide more detailed information on the small e-ink screen of the Pebble. The Citizen, on the other hand, is the first conventional, analogue-display watch to link with the iPhone and remains a rather odd mix of electronics and dials and pointers.

There is a lot of information displayed on the dial and, as I mentioned at the outset, the tiny blue on black lettering is difficult to read. The hour and minute hands frequently cover the particular part of the function or mode dial that you need to consult. It is a cluttered display, typical of Citizen multi-function watches over the years, and will be frustrating for anyone with less than perfect eyesight. It isn't all that good for people with good eyesight, come to think of it.

The time synchronisation with the iPhone is faultless and the watch is a buy on this function alone. With two time zones and integration with the iPhone's over-the-air time sync, the watch is likely to be an ideal travelling companion. Old-style mechanical time-zone watches such as the Rolex GMT Master II require manual setting and adjustment. However, the display on the Rolex, for instance, is far clearer and simpler than Citizen has managed to achieve.

The alerts are a mixed bag.

Clearly a watch for the iPhone aficionado, but I have already been disappointed by the dial design. It's really hard to read the subsidiary dials with a black background. Additionally, the iPhone functions are incredibly hard to read. That said, it's a stylish and substantial timepiece.

The solar power charging seems to work very well, though ultimately limits the viability of the watch. With no cell to replace, once the solar recharging fails, then so does the watch. I'm guessing a Citizen repair would not be financially viable. Given the high purchase price, this probably limits its viability to 5-8 years only.

The usefulness of the iOS integration is open to debate. In my experience, the watch often loses connectivity with the iPhone, even though only placed feet apart. Re-connection is fiddly and after a few days, you resort to using this as a stand-alone timepiece, only occasionally re-connected to sync the watch with the time server. I'm baffled the interface doesn't alert you to text messages, whereas alerting you to every email on a busy account seems practically pointless.

The watch vibration alert is very subtle and easy to miss; but at least this means receipt of alerts is very discreet.

The necessary third party iOS app needs to be running in the background for any alert or sync to function. The Bluetooth connectivity is a fair drain on your device's battery - which is quite a substantial drawback.

All in all, a solid timepiece with a hard-to-read dial. The iOS functions are more a gimmick and a talking point than any practical use. A worthy gift for a gimmick/gadget fan, but an otherwise impractical and overpriced piece of redundant metal!

I got this watch not knowing how it would create a stir around my friends. Everyone loves it, they keep asking to see it , play with the bluetooth sync. Apart from that, the fact that its black, it compliments all manner of dress codes wether official, casual, and jewelery.

I'd recommend it to anyone.
