Product Description

Manufacturer's Description

The Citizen BL8000-54L stainless steel men's watch is loaded with style and time-keeping features. It's powered by Citizen's unique Eco-Drive, which absorbs sunlight as well as any artificial light through the crystal and dial to recharge the watch continuously. With regular exposure to light, the Eco-Drive recharges itself for a lifetime of use. The watch also has a perpetual calendar that automatically adjusts for odd and even months and leap years through 2100.

It has a blue dial background with three subdials for 24-hour, day, and month as well as date window at 4 o'clock. The silver stainless steel bracelet band is composed of small brushed links, and is joined by a fold-over clasp with hidden push button. Other features include water resistance to 330 feet (100 meters), an alarm, and a scratch-resistant, non-reflective mineral crystal.

Summary of Features:

  • Retrograde perpetual calendar
  • Alarm
  • Dual time
  • Non-reflective mineral crystal
  • Month-Day-Date functions
  • 12/24 hour time
  • Screw-back case

The company was established in 1924. The founding fathers selected the name Citizen so it would be "Close to the Hearts of People Everywhere" and soon after adopted the company’s formal name, Citizen Watch Company.

During the last seventy-five years Citizen has expanded its business throughout the world and has achieved recognition as the global brand. The past twenty-five year period has coincided with the company’s dramatic rise to its current position as the world’s largest watchmaker, a distinction Citizen has held every year since 1986.

Beyond sheer size, Citizen is also recognized as a worldwide leader in advanced technology. From the world’s slimmest LCD watch to the first voice recognition watch and the world’s first professional dive watch with an electronic depth sensor, Citizen’s record of "world’s firsts" is unmatched.

More recently, Citizen has staked out a new position as the leader in Ecologically Friendly timekeeping with its Eco-Drives watches that are light powered. With models ranging from dress models to sports models to professional dive watches, Citizen Eco-Drive runs continuously in any kind of natural or artificial light for a lifetime of use. Fueled by light, it never needs a battery.

Eco-Drive Frequently Asked Questions (See the full Citizen Eco-Drive FAQ here)

How can you tell if the Eco-Drive watch is getting enough light?
In normal use, the watch displays the time and the sweep-second hand moves in one second intervals. A very important feature of Eco-Drive is the Low Charge Warning Mode which as a result of low battery voltage, causes the second hand to jump two seconds at a time (while still keeping correct time).

How long will an Eco-Drive watch run after it is fully charged?
If your watch is put away where no light is available to it while in a fully charged state, depending on the model, it will run for from 45 days to 5 years.

How can the Eco-Drive watch be recharged?
Besides sunlight, it can be safely charged by exposing it to a fluorescent desk lamp, with the dial (face) up and within about 8 inches or an incandescent lamp (regular light bulb) no closer than 20 inches. Never use a halogen lamp since the heat generated by it can cause damage to your watch. The most efficient and the quickest is in direct bright sunlight (not windowsill) and never on the dashboard of a car.

4.0 out of 5 stars Almost perfect, 2 Dec 2007
By

(REAL NAME)
A very nice watch with an attractive collection of functional dials. The watch feels heavy and well made, with a nice balance of polished, matt and dark components on the screen. I particularly like the polished Roman numerals.

It has a perpetual calendar, duel time and solar power, so could be used with no alteration at all until 28th Feb 2100, with just a day of strong sunshine a year.

The alarm is easy to set and works over 24 hours, and adjusts if you are using the second time zone (local time) display. The calendar display shows week day, month day, month and leap year clearly, as I would want from a perpetual calendar. Another dial also shows the 24 hour time, important when setting the alarm, although this dial is slightly too small to show much more than whether the time is AM or PM.

The watch is not perfect. Using the functions needs a little practice. For instance I need to pull the crown out slightly to select options, but it tends to pull out all the way. This hacks the time (sets the seconds to zero) and therefore breaks the time. This is annoying. When setting the alarm, the main hands move to show the alarm time. This can take an annoyingly long time, more than a minute or two. It's therefore a little hard to just view the alarm time. The alarm volume is also week, probably because of the low power available. The duel time only adjusts by whole hours. For anybody travelling to Southern Australia this would be anoying since that state is only 30 minutes difference. Also some of the functions cannot be worked without learning the manual, especially setting the dates. However this is set at the factory so would not be a problem.

However the strengths of the watch easily out-weight any problems. The watch looks and feels a lot more expensive that it is, with all components giving some real function. It's nice to look at, feels nice, and is nice to use. I am very happy with this watch.

4.0 out of 5 stars Nice watch but could easily have been better, 23 May 2010

This review is from: Citizen Men's Eco-Drive Calibre 8700 Perpetual Calendar Watch #BL8000-54L (Watch)
This is my first eco-drive watch. Rather expensive and searching the net can reveal significant price differences. I wish that it had a scratch-proof sapphire face like many Seikos. Also, again unlike many Seikos, the month (date) can not be explicitly or easily seen. You have to take off the watch and fiddle around to see the month. Not convenient. The links on the strap can be easily removed using a thin pin and tapping with a mallet/hammer - in the direction of the arrows on the back of the links - and then pulling out the protruding end with a pair of pliers. No need for a special tool. Overall a nice classy and functional watch.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent watch, 6 Jan 2010

This review is from: Citizen Men's Eco-Drive Calibre 8700 Perpetual Calendar Watch #BL8000-54L (Watch)
This is a very smart, good looking watch which on appearances far outdoes other watches in its price range.

I won't babble, but I do want to address some of the scruples people have made:

Firstly, on my watch at least, it is very easy to pull out the crown to the first position without slipping to the second position. Also, whilst this does stop the second hand, the second wheel (cog) keeps in motion so that when you are finished the second hand returns to the place where it should be, therefore not hacking time as one reviewer has stated.

Secondly the instructions are relatively simple so that having read them once you will be more than able to do most of the things you want to without having to refer back to the manual.

I will agree that the watch does take some time to display the set alarm time, and that the alarm is rather faint so cannot be relied upon to wake you from heavy sleep. Also there is no 'sleep' function so the alarm is a once only affair.

All things considered, this is an excellent watch for the price for anyone who does not require the alarm to be a major function.
