Book Description

19 Jun 2008
Remarkably, more than half the world's population now lives in cities, and the numbers grow daily as people abandon rural areas. This fully updated and revised fourth edition of the classic text offers readers a comprehensive set of tools for understanding the urban landscape, and, by extension, the world's politics, cultures, and economies. Providing a sweeping overview of world urban geography, a group of noted experts explores the eleven major global regions. Each author presents the region's urban history, economy, culture and society, as well as urban spatial models and problems and prospects. Environmental, human security, globalization, and cyberspace topics are fully developed as well. Vignettes of seventy-eight key cities give the reader a vivid understanding of daily life and the 'spirit of place.' An introductory chapter presents an overview of key terms and concepts, and a concluding chapter projects the world's urban future. Liberally illustrated with a new selection of photographs, maps, and diagrams, the text also includes a rich array of boxes to highlight key topics ranging from gender and the city to Islamic fashion and global warming. Bibliographic sources, websites, and an appendix of UN data provide additional resources for helping students understand more about the urban world. Clearly written and timely, this text will be invaluable for those teaching introductory or advanced classes on global cities, regional geography, and urban studies.

Review

Cities of the World is comprehensive and presents in-depth discussions of world cities that are shaped by different historical, geographical, political, and cultural circumstances. I highly recommend this excellent text to undergraduate classes in general education, geography, planning and urban studies, international development, and to anyone interested in world cities and regions. Journal Of Geography Outstanding! This thoroughly updated classic offers a comprehensive portrayal of the character and complexity of the world's cities. Contemporary trends and issues that continue to reshape all corners of the globe unfold here in a thoroughly accessible manner. Whether one considers environmental issues, growth trends, tourism appeal, or historical context, Cities of the World delivers for the reader. Appropriate as both a textbook and reference tool, urbanists in all fields will gain from the insights that geographers present here. Students of the humanities, social sciences, and business disciplines will equally benefit. -- Hartshorn, Truman A.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good Book 30 Nov 2011

I used this book for a geography class and kept it as a reference. It's mostly thorough, well written, and exceptional as a reference for further study. It's formulaic in that it covers the same issues for each chapter, so it is easy to use when studying geography. Those issues are economics, politics, physical/urban geography, culture, and history. I don't think I would use it as a casual read, but it would be a positive contribution to a reference library. I mentioned to my professor that I thought the chapter on the middle east was not unbiased. The book follows a formula of good and bad characteristics of all regions, but the negative side of the middle east was oddly absent, particularly human rights. I noted this issue to my professor who demonstrated serious surprise and appreciation for my observation and stated that he would mention my comments to his friend, the author. Otherwise, I really liked the book and, as I said, keep it for reference.

This book is useful in comparing city populations, urban planning, and urban development superficially. It is not useful for very in depth understanding. It is good for understanding trends of development, especially for regions of the world.
