A truly fascinating work - indeed, one that really should be read by everyone. Stan Gooch is probably Britain's greatest living thinker, yet he remains criminally neglected by the establishment. His theories are progressively being confirmed by 'scientific discovery' yet his name is never mentioned or credited as the originator of the ideas. A recent documentary, for example, proposed the theory of Neanderthals interbreeding with early man to produce modern man - Gooch's decades-old theory, yet he remained uncredited! All his books are truly of great humanitarian importance and should never be allowed to go out of print - order one now and read it, you'll see what I mean.

Having just finished reading 'Cities of Dreams', I was pleasantly surprised to read, in two separate news items, that the Neanderthal gene is present in most humans on the planet. I have always suspected that Neanderthal people were not as depicted by the average scientist or archaeologist and over the last several years, more and more information is becoming available. Neanderthal people were just as complex and mysterious, to some extent, as our Paleolithic and Neolithic ancestors. They may not have been any pleasanter than Cro-Magnon people, but they don't seem to have made such a negative impact on the planet! OK, we are a mixture now and it's up to us to get the balance into living on this planet, but it isn't bad to think and share thoughts on our most ancient history and how we humans really developed (especially as they keep finding even older versions of hominids than 'Lucy') so that we better understand our behaviour & psyche and stop making excuses for the bad elements - change them! As a Pagan and Witch, I found it an interesting book from the perspective of ancient religion, but it also appealed to my own interest in ancient archaeology & history.
My only real quibble with this book, is that I wish the proof-reading had been better!

I haven't read this book of Stan's yet, but I will. I am prepared to award it five stars already because it has earned such a vitriolic and nasty review from Laura Knight Kadczyk. If you have ever had the misfortune to pick up one of her rambling, curiously imaginative, diatribes you will realise that any author she puts down probably has something going for him. What her review raises though, is a serious question, about how some authors now review down those they identify as "competitors" in Amazon reviews - hoping that by suppressing a competitors sales, their own will be maximised. Amazon should step in to stop this - because reviews, like this one in fact, become meaningless.
