Book Description

29 Sep 1995 Travel
The Cistercian movement swept across Europe in the 12th century, founding monastic movements as it went, and greatly influencing every area of religious and secular life. This is an account of the founding and development of the order, with descriptions of the monastic life. Architectural practice and the design precepts of the monasteries are considered, suggesting reasons why these beautiful, rural retreats have such an enduring appeal. The book provides a guide to all the Cistercian abbeys founded in the Middle Ages, with maps covering the whole of Europe and information regarding the architectural style and accessibility of the abbeys. An appendix gives information on those abbeys which have been converted into hotels, guest houses and restaurants."

4.0 out of 5 stars Cistercian Monasticism 23 Oct 2007
Format:Paperback
This is a fascinating, yet strangely elusive account of the Cistercians.Tobin's command of the history and the expansion of the Order is impressive. His account is well written and includes a great amount of detail. However,I wish there had been more about St.Bernard of Clairvaux, who after all gave the Order its Rule, and that of the Knights Templar. That said, this is a wonderful account of the most ascetic order in the western tradition.

I read this tome some years ago. It traces the history of one of Catholicism's great religious orders. As you read the boook you will be amazed how many agricultural innovations were begun in Cistercian abbeys across Europe in the eleventh, twelfth and thirteenth centuries.
