Product Description

Product Description

OSPF (Open Shortest Path First) is a popular routing protocol. By deploying this protocol with a Cisco router, messages can get to their destination faster. This text shows the network manager how to maximise the use of OSPF with Cisco router technology.

From the Author

A complete OSPF reference with RIP, IGRP, and EIGRP.
The Cisco Router OSPF Design and Implementation Guide is based upon my experiences preparing for the CCIE exam and my tenure in the Wichita State University CCIE preparation lab. Clear and complete configurations are presented for all OSPF commands and the interaction between OSPF and other IP routing protocols (RIP, RIPv2,IGRP and EIGRP). Other chapters include an extensive cover of IP (subnetting and VLSM) and traffic management using access lists.

Where's the OSPF? 30 Dec 1999
Format:Paperback
I suggest that the title of book be changed from "Cisco Router OSPF" to something like "Using Routing Protocols." After nearly 200 pages of basic information concerning a host of Cisco supported routing protocols, Parkhurst finally decides to begin his discussion of OSPF (Chapter 11, pages 203?). His OSPF discussion is extremely basic and fails to add any new information that one couldn't find for free .... In short, don't waste your money on this book!

Overall I felt this book provided many good and well structured examples of an OSPF designed network. However, it became apparent immediately within the first few chapters that typo's abound. This may or may not be an issue for a person already familiar with OSPF and TCP/IP, but for those readers who are trying to acquire first hand knowledge of OSPF I would pass on this book until the reader was able to correctly identify, confirm and read through such inaccuracies. Too much time is wasted re-reading the text to determine if the reader "misunderstood" the text or if the text is inaccurate. Many of the inaccuracies are within the beginning chapters, including the diagrams and pictorials themselves.

With these inaccuracies fixed and "proofread" this COULD be a first rate book. I find it very hard to believe that Cisco put their signature on this book.

The Author did an excellent job of defining the scope and complexity of OSPF, but needs to provide a "concise and accurate" manual. As with most technical publications, books such as these end up being used as reference material. Therefore, a single mistake cannot be tolerated.

It is NOT of the caliber of even the most basic Cisco Press training products (which serve double duty as first time reading material and future reference manuals).

Buyer beware.

As a Network Planner I need to stay current on all new technology. This book is a big help. I do not have the time nor the resources to become an expert on ever protocol out there. It is great to have a book such as "Cisco Router OSPF" to help me stay current. "Cisco Router OSPF" has a detailed description of several network and routing protocols that is easy to read and simple to understand. After reading the first six chapters, I now know the reasoning behind allot of thing I just thought of as FM. Every Network Planner should have this book on the shelf.

Should Be Retitled "Intro to Assorted Routing Protocol"
I bought this book knowing that there was a minimal amount of OSPF, but hoping it would provide decent CCIE Prep. Don't Bet On It! This is NOT an advanced book by any stretch. Read more

Just another Cisco Documentation.
For those of you who feel comfortable with Cisco Documentation books, this book might help, or I suggest you to skip this book.

OSPF is not discussed in depth, back to the RFC's
I was very disappointed with this publication because I was expecting a book on OSPF design and implementation. There was not enough information on any of the protocols discussed. Read more

An OK overview, but not stunning value.
This book certainly isn't principally about OSPF.

It contains information relevant to the CCIE program, but possibly not at the depth required. Read more
