Take That Present The Circus Live

Biography

Take That are an English five-piece pop-rock band consisting of Gary Barlow, Howard Donald, Jason Orange, Mark Owen and Robbie Williams. Barlow acts as the group's main singer songwriter. Formed in Manchester in 1990, the band achieved major success, selling more than 25 million records between 1991–96 alone before disbanding.[1] In 2005 the group reformed without Williams and achieved new success… Read more in Amazon's Take That Store

Product Description

BBC Review

Staging a comeback far bigger than any of us could have imagined, it's now time for Take That - The Man Band to release their 2nd album since returning to their adoring fanbase looking slightly crinkly. Circus, coincidentally released on the same day as Britney's album of the same name, is it, and we're pleased to report it's pretty damn amazing.

Modern day Take That are like the drama faces of Melpomene and Thalia. Gary Barlow, the graceful swan of the group, is cementing his position as the country's premier pop writer by dripping tragedy over soaring, epic ballads. Melancholy lament What Is Love has Howard shining on lead vocals, questioning 'the science of fate' while title track The Circus says it best with "I'm the only clown you'll ever know. I love you was too many words to say". The brilliant Rule The World might be hard to top but opening track The Garden and the perky Hold Up The Light have that same magical feel. With songs like this, we're left curious why they went with the relatively lacklustre Greatest Day as lead single.

Then there's Mark Owen, representing comedy, still happily bouncing about like Clementine was as big a hit as it should have been and creating adorable upbeat pop songs Paul McCartney would be proud to sing. If Morrisons have ruined Shine for you, then the cheeky Hello will happily take its place in your heart. Julie puts Mark in story telling mode and almost feels like a sequel to Babe, but the real highlight is the utterly catchy Up All Night complete with a proper oom pah pah band and skip down the street chorus - we can just imagine the video with Take That clad in drummer outfits with big shiny silver buttons.

A stunning album, Take That are the vintage champagne of pop fizzing with playful bubbles and happily maturing with age. --Talia Kraines

5.0 out of 5 stars A real grower, 15 Dec 2008
By
J. Hunt (Leeds) - See all my reviews

This review is from: The Circus (Audio CD)
Track by track after two weeks listening:
The Garden: Draws you in and makes you feel good to be alive. Would have been a great Christmas single.
Greatest Day: A nice homage to U2 (Where the Streets Have no Name.) Liked it the first time I heard it. Still do.
Hello: Not convinced to begin with. Driving down the motorway in the sunshine, it was suddenly a great singalong track.
Said it All: Gorgeous. Nuff Said.
Julie: Felt sad about something at work. Listened to 'Julie'. Felt happy again.
The Circus: Beautiful in its simplicity
How Did it Come to This: Autobiographical? A great performance of a cleverly worded track. One of my favourites.
Up All Night: Fabulous live
What Is Love: Howard comes precariously close to perfection with this one.
You: The only track I have yet to warm to. Too formulaic for me. Sorry!
Hold up a light: Not my favourite vocal but it'll be a killer live then a great memory thereafter.
Here: Fab-u-lous. Play it on repeat.
She said: A Strictly special. Simply lovely and great fun.

5.0 out of 5 stars Real progress; brilliant!, 7 Dec 2008

As a fifty something brought up on The Beatles I am not your typical Take That fan, but despite this, I have always liked them, especially since the comeback.

This is a terrific album - great songs, beautifully sung, beautifully performed, beautifully produced - a triumph.

It is actually more Coldplay that the Take That of Roobie era fame.

Open your mind and enjoy.

5.0 out of 5 stars Simply put...brilliant!, 20 Jan 2009
By
This review is from: The Circus (Audio CD)
After the phenomenal success of "Beautiful World" in 2006, I figured it virtually impossible to match, or even come close, in a second outing. I was wrong. Although "The Circus" is different both in approach, and overall vibe, it stays true to the intensely strong talent behind it. Between the brilliant songwriting by all four members, to the fantastic production by John Shanks, this album is a natural progression on the continuing path of Take That. I am totally thankful to have the group back making beautiful, epic music again. Whenever I can't find the words, these guys seem take them right out of my mouth.
