4.0 out of 5 stars A good informative book, for novice and expert alike., 18 Oct 2001
By A Customer
Every carpetener or joiner should have a copy of this book... It goes into detail, and covers every aspect of the process. From marking out, to the construction of those hard elliptical heads & conical roofs. The information covers roofs, windows, even skylights and goes right down to small bulls eye windows.

5.0 out of 5 stars A joy to own, 23 Jan 2009

(TOP 1000 REVIEWER)
It's a sad but simple fact that most of the skills of the old craftsmen have been lost over the years. Circular work in carpentry is enjoying somewhat of a revival at the moment but the skills needed are hard to find. Now with the republishing of George Collings work of 1886 we can try to attain some of the lost knowledge. With Karl Shumacher providing additional diagrams and annotations some of the more difficult geometry is simplified for today's user. ( A move I greatly welcome )

There's no substitute for good old fashioned knowledge and although very difficult circular work is worth persevering with and can be very rewarding. In this book you will find info and diagrams on :

Solid headed frames
Elliptical heads
Bulls eye frames
Gothic headed frames
Cased frames
Circular mouldings
Circular angle brackets and hip rafters
Double curvature work
Conical roofs and skylights

This book is a treat for nostalgic carpenters like myself and the possibility of using some of the techniques contained makes me go all warm and fuzzy !! Each to their own I hear you say. Buy this book and you'll see what I mean....
