Format: Paperback
This is not the first Elm Creek novel, but it's the first one I have read and I don't think it matters too much.

The story is about a group of quilters who have set up a quilting retreat and workshops in a beautiful old house in the countryside. As ever, I did find myself feeling slightly riled by this plot device, as it's amazing how many women in books seems to have limitless funds to do things most of us will never be able to! That aside, however, the book is a good story - it revolves around the original Elm Creek Quilters needing to recruit two new instructors who are leaving.

The story of each applicant is told, from the moment she (or he) reads the advert, to their interview at Elm Creek and what happens later. I found the characters very believable - the young mother whose husband doesn't understand how frustrated she is at home, the bereaved husband whose late wife quilted, the woman whose poverty has meant she has been constantly under a so-called "friend's" thumb, and the cook who lets her vile boyfriend treat her like dirt because she doesn't feel worthy of anything better. In time-honoured style, each of these people grows as the story progresses. Not all of them end up where they expected to be, but each of them develops in a satisfying manner.

I enjoyed this book; I wanted to know what happened to the characters, and I loved the quilting details. I would recommend it to anyone who wants a fairly light read with some interesting background about quilting.

Just read this one, really enjoyed it! So interesting! Elm Creek Manor are recruiting new instructors, so you get meet the different characters, why they apply for the job, how they got into craft... a really good story. Especially liked Russ' story - and how he overcome prejudices in the sewing world for a male quilter - - very good.

Excellent and interesting story, as they all are, especially to a quilter. Have just started reading the series and can't put them down. Would recommend the series to non quilters too.
