Book Description

First in Keri Arthur's Damask Circle trilogy set in a world of vampires and shapeshifters, CIRCLE OF FIRE has it all: danger, intrigue, magic, passion and romance

Product Description

Sixteen teenagers taken from their homes. Eleven bodies recovered, each completely drained of blood. Some believe vampires are responsible. Jon Barnett knows its something far worse, and while in Taurin Bay to stop the killers, he quickly becomes enmeshed in a web of black magic. He needs help but fate gives him only one choice. Madeline Smith has retreated to an isolated farmhouse, afraid of the abilities she cannot control - abilities that have killed. But when a 'ghost' brings a warning of danger and her nephew goes missing, Maddie has to leave her haven and learn to control the abilities she fears. As Maddie and Jon's search for the teenagers becomes a race against time, the greatest danger to them both could be the feelings they refuse to acknowledge.

Enjoyable 16 Aug 2009
By Gareth Wilson - Falcata Times Blog TOP 500 REVIEWER VINE™ VOICE

If we're going for honesty here I haven't read Keri's work before but I was intrigued by the cover blurb. What transpired between the pages was what happens when a character really doesn't want to get involved. Yes she had some supernatural ability but she isn't a combat machine like so many of the Heroes/Heroines within the majority of Urban Fantasy novels. Its smarts that get her places and along with the characters insecurities its something that really will appeal to the reader as you can't help but like Maddie. The tale is well written and with enough plot to keep you fascinated as well as twisting its way towards it conclusion. It's a tale that has made me take notice of Keri and if the other novels in the series are half as good as this, I'll become a firm fan of her work.

Disappointed 1 Mar 2011
Format:Paperback
I had read and enjoyed the Riley Jenson books so was hoping to like Keri Arthur's other work. I was wrong. This wasn't anything like as well written or engaging as the Riley books and I couldn't help but feel let down.

I really wanted to like this as I wanted a new series to get my teeth into but I just couldn't make myself give a damn about the main characters even a little bit, if anything I wanted to slap them half the time. Madeline was so weak and pathetic I wanted to scream at her needy behaviour and self doubt. I cant stand women when they are portrayed like this 'all I need is a man to make my life complete and value myself' Pur-lease!

The whole thing was just a weak paranormal romance to me and that's being kind.
Basically, if you liked the Riley books dont buy this or you'll be sorely dissapointed.

Really good read! 9 Jan 2011
By Claire Mill TOP 1000 REVIEWER

I've read and enjoyed Keri's Riley Jenson series so I thought I'd give this one a go as well as it sounded interesting. And I really enjoyed it!! It's very different from her Riley books, not nearly as sassy and far, far less sex (which personally, I find a bonus cause there was too much sex in the early Riley books for my tastes). It's got a grimmer feel to it and a constant foreboding that had me hooked from the start. I loved the two main characters, Jon and Maddie, their differences and the chemistry between them. The book is written in third person, from both of their points of view, meaning we get a chance to really get to know both better which I enjoyed.

Plot wise it's very good as well. It's not the fastest plot, but it's certainly engaging and hard to put down. I really liked the world building, with the different paranormal aspects and how they fit in to the story. I liked the growth of the story, how it unfolded as it went on. At the start things happened quite suddenly and I had a couple minor WTH?! moments. But it quickly smoothed out and became a really great read. To be honest, this is, in many ways, more to my tastes than the Riley Jenson series, which I do love as well. I loved the ending. Very intense and while it answered a lot of questions, it didn't wrap things up too neatly leaving nothing to the imagination. It was a very satisfying ending. I know the other two books in the trilogy focus on different people, so I'm curious to see what they're like. But I certainly think the writing and story here are excellent so hopefully they'll be just as good!!
