5.0 out of 5 stars Another great book., 25 Aug 2005
By Clare "clare030182" (Plymouth, Devon, UK) - See all my reviews

This story continues the tale of Thais and Clio twins that were raised apart because of their heritage - withcraft.
They met when Thais father was killed and her new guardian moved her to New Orleans.
This story isn't a read alone if you are interested you should start with book 1 - Chalice of Wind.
This book lets us find out more about the members of the Trieze coven and about the twins history as they begin to use their magic together.
Thais struggles to get to grips with her new magic as things don't go as planned and tries to get interested in a new boy whilst still struggling with her feelings for Luc.
Clio is still struggling with her own feelings for Luc and her jealous about his love for Thais. She gets a new dilemma as things begin to happen with another member of the Coven.
Daedelus is pushing to have the coven all reunited to put his plan (whatever that might ultimately be) into action.
This book gives us more insight into the past whilst setting us up for whats to come in the next book. I'm going to pre-order book 3 now.
i think this story is great. Well done Cate :D

3.0 out of 5 stars Second Installment of Teen Witches, 30 Jul 2006
By Scriber_scouse "scriber_scouse" - See all my reviews
(TOP 500 REVIEWER)
Circle of Ashes is the second of a four book series about teenage witches Thais and Clio; these can be read as stand alones as each book recaps unobtrusively on the previous installments. You do get much more of a feel for the story if these are read in order.

Tiernan's Balefire is another witch series but has crucial differences from Sweep/Wicca (UK title) the use of magic in Balefire is very different and focuses on New Orleans magic Bonne Magie. Thais and Clio were identical twins separated at birth, for their own protection and to prevent a dark prophecy regarding twins in their system of magic. Clio has been raised fully aware of her powers living with her grandmother whereas Thais is utterly ignorant of her magic and lived with her father until a fatal car accident meant she was taken to live in New Orleans.

Now aware of her lineage Thais under Clio's direction tries to work magic with disastrous results. Both girls are still recovering from Luc's romantic interference, and coming to terms with the unusual legacy of the Trieze coven. This second book is notable for the revelations about the Trieze backstory it's members including the girls' grandmother are immortal, cursed by a dark coven member to remain ageless for centuries.

The twins are vital to make up the full thirteen members of the coven and sinister Daedalus (the coven leader) is intent on pushing them into a rite that may break the curse. The twins don't know who to trust in this installment as they come under magickal attack repeatedly.

This is a fun, installment and Tiernan handles the switches in perspective and time very well. I felt very sorry for Clio who still loves Luc but is torn by her new bond with her twin sister Thais. I have to admit I'm not as keen on Thais as she's a little boring for me. This is progressing nicely as a series and I look forward to the next two books.

3.0 out of 5 stars Balefire book two, 7 Aug 2007
The second book in the Balefire series picks up directly where book one finished. Both twins are trying to get over Luc's double betrayal and move on with their lives. Thais begins to start learning about magick and witchcraft with the help of Clio and Petra, but whenever her and Clio try to perform a spell together it has dire consequences.

This book focuses more on the relationship forming between the two reunited twins, their relationships with the other coven members and other random non-witches in their city (New Orleans). There are a few interesting events surrounding the twins that happen and it is further selling New Orleans to me as a holiday destination. I wonder whether the Mardi Gras fountain is really there and if it survived the hurricane.

It didn't really move the main story along too much, but hopefully the next book will. I did enjoy it, but it wasn't as interesting as the first one and I didn't feel it really got going until the last few chapters. We are still no nearer to finding out who is trying to harm the twins and why. I will definately be reading the last two books in the series.
