Product Description

Product Description

Cipe Pineles was art director of "Glamour", "Seventeen", "Charm" and "Mademoiselle" magazines between 1930 and 1960. She helped to create the institutional identity of the Lincoln Center in the 1960s, and taught generations of students at Parsons School of Design. Tracing Pineles' career, Martha Scotford chronicles her professional life at a time when few women were involved in design and assesses her contributions to graphic and magazine design.

From the Author

Cipe Pineles's life is one of several stories.
You don't need to know about Design or be especially interested in Design to enjoy this book! Cipe Pineles may be best known for her work in graphic design and fashion publishing, but her 'story' is one for readers who like an interesting character, who happens to be a woman and a talented one. In addition to being an independent creative and professional woman in American when there were few (1930s) her story is also about a young immigrant Jewish girl from Austria, a plucky and lucky career girl, a wartime wife, a struggling professional, an editorial team member (with two women who were her best friends), a working mother (when this was more common than we think), a widow (twice), a design partner, a teacher, lover, friend and colleague. She was admired for her talent as an illustrator as well as for her style and entertaining; she was an equal partner of two (better known at the time) men who were also designers. She did beautiful work, loved to teach, and is a good role model for those who seek to combine a creative career with a satisfying private life. Lots of beautiful images to look at too!

I thoroughly enjoyed the book as a biography about a talented woman who shaped magazine design in the early days. As a designer and design educator, I especially appreciated having her professional and personal life put into the context of the time in which she and her husbands worked. Also a valuable reference.

Will the real Cipe please stand up? 17 Mar 1999
By Michelle B. Braverman - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Hardcover|Amazon Verified Purchase
Cipe Pineles was someone I had heard much about but knew very little of her work or history. I've come away from reading this book feeling that Cipe must have been charming and idiosyncratic, but I still don't feel I know much about her or her design philosophy. She comes across as almost disdainful of the work she is best known for, designing and art directing women's fashion magazines. It's also written a bit dryly with some confusing back-and-forth of events. Don't forget your magnifying glass; the examples of her design work are presented not much larger than thumbnails! In all, not worth the steep price and not, I fear, the definitive insight and appreciation of Cipe Pineles.

All designers should read this book. 15 Oct 1999
By Kara Kotwas (kakotwas@mailbox.syr.edu) - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Hardcover
As a student of graphic design, I could have not been more fortunate that this book came out when it did, it was my only research source for a design project I did last year. After reading it, I felt as though I knew Cipe personally. Scotford's account is rich with sensitivity and detail, and is well-organized and well-written.
