5.0 out of 5 stars "Serious Film Score Collectors", 29 Mar 2000
By J. Lovins "Mr. Jim" - Published on Amazon.com
This review is from: Cinema Century 2000 (Audio CD)
There are compilations and then there are "Compilations". The first two CD's are devoted to music from the ultimate composers ever to come out of Hollywood, such as Max Steiner, E.W.Korngold, Alfred Newman, Mikloz Rozsa, Franz Waxman, David Raksin, Henry Mancini, Dimitri Tiomkin, Johnny Mandel, Michel Legrand, Nino Rota, Ennio Morricone and Maurice Jare. This line-up of preludes and suites beginning with KING KONG...ADVENTURES OF ROBIN HOOD...WUTHERING HEIGHTS...THE SEA HAWK...THIEF OF BAGDAD...MARK OF ZORRO...PRINCE VALIANT...CAINE MUTINY...and THE VIKINGS is very impressive. THE MARK OF ZORRO (Alfred Newman) is a real treat, this has to be one selection you never find on any compilations, but here it is on a Silva Treasury.

The performance by City of Prague Philharmonics on David Arnold's INDEPENDENCE DAY has to be one of the highlights especially when the choir comes in. Franz Waxman's PRINCE VALIANT is another score worth mentioning, the sound is spectacular.

Some selections are missing, but when you think of what you've included, it is impossible to please everyone. Was happy to see two selections by Henry Mancini, as I feel this composer deserves all the recognition that have been overlooked recently in the music world.

This collection of compilations is aimed directly at the "Serious Film Score" music fans and collectors. And this Silva Screen compilation is as always, just perfect and extremely enjoyable.

2.0 out of 5 stars Heroic effort, but mangled output, 12 Oct 2006
By hydeparkchi "hydeparkchi" - Published on Amazon.com
This review is from: Cinema Century 2000 (Audio CD)
I own 12 of the original soundtracks for the themes that are included in this compilation (which are reorchestrations/re-recordings by the City of Prague Philharmonic)... Most of these 12 themes are badly mangled in these recordings... for example, the original Mask of Zorro theme recording is much more precise, dynamic and lyrical than the recording presented in this set.. same is true for Braveheart, etc.
