You couldn’t invent the story of Nazareth if you tried. At their peak, the Dunfermline rock group were huge, selling vast quantities of albums and pulling in enormous crowds to their shows. By rights, when the group’s profile receded a little and they morphed into the highly respected club-level regulars that they are today, their reputation should have become tarnished – but ... After a pretty lacksture response to 'Sound Elixier' and 'The Catch' which were released in 1983 and 1984 respectively, Nazareth went back into the studio and produced their finest album in years with 'Cinema.' On those other two albums they had moved away from their original 12 bar blues heavy rock format and their fans must have been wondering "Was this nazareth"? Was this the same band who had done badass songs like Razamanaz, Hair Of The Dog and Woke Up This Morning. Five years before Cinema they had released the excellent live album 'Snaz' which saw them have a short lived six piece line-up. By the time The Catch hit the shelves the band were a four piece again with the original four members, so what was going wrong? Nazareth didn't need to change their style to become more radio friendly because every Naz album has a ballad on it anyway. On Cinema though Naz struck back at everyone with a vengeance. Cinema saw them go back to how they were in the seventies. IT ROCKS!!! It includes a rock ballad called Juliet which is a Naz classic, while Just Another Heartache is of a more upbeat tempo, it rocks too, and Hit The Fan is probably one of the best rock songs they have done, While One From The Heart is warmly appreciated, Slty Salty is another great Naz classic, and the title track is just pure Nazareth heaven...
Cinema is a true return to form for Dan McCaffery who is the most underatted vocalist in rock. Axl Rose has made millions out of ripping him off and I don't blame him cos I look to him for my vocal style sometimes too. He is amongst the best vocalists in the world. No one and I mean no-one will ever be Dan McCafferty. The man is just unique, his vocals are strong enough to defy medical science, how can anyone sing like that, without coughing up their guts, it's bloody marvellous!

Very few albums contain an entire track listing of possible singles, and even fewer can boast that there is not a weak track in the bunch...well, this one can!
It is said that when Nazareth was looking to release this album back in 1986, their manager at the time played a demo to a major record label who loved it, but when they were told that the songs that they loved so much was by a bunch of ugly, aging Scotsmen called Nazareth they immediatly said "Forget it, they're dinosours!" Thier loss.
Such hard rocking tracks like Cinema, Hit The Fan and Salty Salty still sound fresh and new today, where as Juliet, Other Side Of You and One From The Heart will have you ripping your vocal chords to shreads trying to sing like Dan McCafferty. Wrapping up the album is White Boy and A Veteran's Song, songs so deep and meaningful that you would be forgiven for thinking that they are cover versions of Springsteen songs.
The '80s proved to be a very creative time for Nazareth, and if it wasn't for the narrow-mindedness of record producers Nazareth could well have had a hugh seller on thier hands. If you like your rock with a bluesy feel and you want to hear it played at it's best, then pick up a copy of Cinema and give the album the recognition it deserves.

It's a Rocker! this cd will not dissapoint Naz fans, albeit typical eighties production, slightly electronic sound on the drums and distant vocals, but all in all a great rock and melodic cd

Nazareth in the 80's 20 Nov. 2007
By Justin G. - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Audio CD
1986's Cinema was actually my first exposure to Nazareth, so I'm not as hard on the album as some fans. I can see how it might be disappointing to some of the band's long-time fans, but expecting a 70's era rock band to maintain that 70's style in the mid 1980's is somewhat unrealistic. Bands like Deep Purple, Rainbow, Whitesnake all modified their sound (some more than others) to keep up with the times, and I think Nazareth managed to do the same without losing too much of their edge.

It may not be Hair of the Dog Part II, but I found Cinema to be a very solid rock & roll album. Sure, there are keyboards and an unmistakable 80's production, but that raucous Nazareth sound is still in place, as are Dan McCafferty's trademark gravelly vocals. Songs like Just Another Heartache, Other Side of You, and Hit the Fan are good examples of Nazareth's rocking sound, while the title track and One From the Heart bring that sound into the 80's. The real highlight of Cinema is the powerful ballad A Veteran's Song, which is as relevant today as it was two decades ago.

I probably wouldn't recommend Cinema to first-time Nazareth listeners because it really isn't as representative of the band's overall sound as some of their earlier albums. It did the trick for me though, and was more than enough to get me to check out the band's other releases.

NOTE: Castle/Sanctuary's 1997 reissue of Cinema features digitally remastered sound as well as a pair of bonus tracks - alternate versions of Just Another Heartache and A Veteran's Song. The bonus tracks are throwaways, but the remastering is a definite plus.

naz comes back from the catch 22 July 2010
By Michael Dobey - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Audio CD
Nazareth had a few mediocre cds in the 80's they started out with the classic 'malice in wonderland" in 1980 though. but by this time the edge was gone it seemed. The catch was a new wavey item that turned naz fans off mainly ,then the band released this one and it's a good rockin cd. This is a fine nazareth cd with songs like 'cinema' , 'veterans song" , and 'salty salty" I can't see why most rock fans would find this one a decent buy. although obviously it's not up to the level as 'no mean city' it's a good rockin disc. I gave it four stars because it was so much better than the last few naz cd's that came before it. And those weren't terrible cds imo at all just not up to what the band was capable of.

One of the better Nazareth albums of the 1980's 7 Jan. 2001
By A Customer - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Audio CD
Cinema is a solid effort. To some extent it marks a return to form for the band as it contains a number of straight-ahead rockers with a few slower numbers mixed in for good measure. The production on the remastered version is very good, although the two extra tracks are disappointing in that they are very similar to the main versions already included on the CD. Highlights include the raucous "Salty Salty" and haunting "A Veteran's Song".

back to rock and roll 31 July 2001
By scott forsythe - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Audio CD
Hi everyone After some lean years in the 80's this album just blew me away, this is exactly why I fell in love with their music in the 70's with any kinda of promotion this album could have been huge here in the states. not one bad track on the platter. I have naz's complete collection and this is a must have.
