The story of “Cinderella” follows the fortunes of young Ella (Lily James) whose merchant father remarries following the death of her mother. Eager to support her loving father, Ella welcomes her new Stepmother (Cate Blanchett) and her daughters Anastasia (Holliday Grainger) and Drisella (Sophie McShera) into the family home. But, when Ella’s father unexpectedly passes away, she finds herself at the mercy of a jealous and cruel new family. Soon, she is forced to become their servant, disrespected, covered in ashes and spitefully renamed Cinderella. Yet, despite the cruelty inflicted upon her, Ella will not give in to despair nor despise those who mistreat her, and she continues to remain positive, determined to honor her mother’s dying words and to “have courage and be kind.” When Ella meets a dashing stranger in the woods, unaware that he is really the Prince (Richard Madden) and not merely Kit, an apprentice at the palace, she believes she has finally found a kindred soul. It appears her fortunes may be about to change when the King (Derek Jacobi) summons all maidens in the kingdom to attend a royal ball at the palace, raising Ella’s hopes of once again encountering the charming Kit. Alas, her Stepmother forbids her to attend and callously destroys her dress. Meanwhile, the calculating Grand Duke (Stellan Skarsgård) devises a plan to thwart the Prince’s hopes of reuniting with Ella and enlists the support of the devious Stepmother. But, as in all good fairy tales, help is at hand. Soon, a kindly beggar woman (Helena Bonham Carter) steps forward and, armed with a pumpkin, a few mice and a magic wand, changes Cinderella’s life forever.

Frozen Fever Animated Short — It’s Anna’s birthday, and Elsa and Kristoff are determined to give her the best celebration ever — but when Elsa catches a cold, her powers may put more than just the party at risk.

I watched this lovely and poignant family film with my 12 year old daughter at the cinema today.
The movie is a largely faithful interpretation of the Cinderella fairy tale, except for the ugly sisters, which I'll come to later. Lily James plays the titular role of Cinderella and gives a mesmerising performance. Of course she's a breathtaking beauty, but she does a very effective job of making Cinderella a stoic, kind-hearted, resolute and very considerate young lady, who overcomes all the slings and arrows which life targets at her.
The film has a superb support cast, including Ben Chaplin as Cinderella's doting father, Cate Blanchette as the Machiavellian wicked stepmother, and probably best of all, Helena Bonham-Carter as the deliciously cool fairy godmother. The costumes, especially the women's ball gowns, are staggeringly beautiful, the wardrobe team should win awards by the bucketload. The set design, props and CGI are equally marvellous, from Cinderella's secluded childhood home in the forest, to the King's palace and Cinderella's golden carriage. The classical film score is perfectly judged and the movie is a visual treat from the opening scene to the closing one.
At it's heart, this film is a simple love story, and the icing on the cake is that Cinderella has a fabulous chemistry with her Prince Charming, who calls himself Kit. The ugly sisters have a role to play too, but this is the one aspect of the movie which was slightly disappointing. The two actresses who play the ugly sisters are not ugly at all, in fact one of them is extremely pretty, and their characters are not quite loathsome enough. If the film had followed tradition and had two curmudgeonly old hags as the ugly sisters, it might have added a comedy element to the film which is missing.

very pleasantly surprised. Thought I would hate it but pretty good. Like the fact there were no gimmicks to update the story. Good acting by all involved. Am I mellowing in my old age. We will see.

Beautiful film, can't wait for the DVD to come out! Though the plot and central characters are a bit insubstantial, that's to be expected from a fairytale. Cate Blanchett kills it as the evil stepmother. Everything is gorgeous.

The movie gives us some background information on Cinderella (Lily James). We get to meet her real parents before their expected deaths. We also see her privileged life and education prior to living with the cartoonish step-sisters and overly evil step mother (Cate Blanchett) who enters the film with her own ominous sound track.

The character of Cinderella is developed beyond the typical one dimension. She is a woman of character who knows right from wrong. She has been elevated from a kept woman or "Cinderella principle" to the woman behind the man. Hey, it's a start and step forward. The prince has wicked blue eyes (Richard Madden) that even a guy would have to notice. The fairy godmother (Helena Bonham Carter) was a Disney delightful character.

My 11 year old grand-niece loved the film and she is not into the princess thing.

Both me and my 14 years old daughter we simply ADORED this film! I must even say more - I was actually IMPRESSED! Below, more of my impressions, with some limited SPOILERS.

Making a really good film about Cinderella, especially in our rather cynical times, is actually much, MUCH harder than it could seem - but Kenneth Branagh absolutely aced it! This film remains quite faithful to the original story AND to the classical animated 1950 version - which by the way I always liked a lot. The story being well known, there is no need to delve on it.

The main pillar of 2015 "Cinderella" is quite obviously Cinderella. Kenneth Branagh's choice for this role turned out to be simply PERFECT. Young Lily James, whom I never saw in anything before (yes, I still didn't watch "Downton Abbey"), is of course a very pretty damsel, but not exactly a Victoria's Secret level looker - that trap was avoided. She is also obviously very talented and she was clearly very well directed, because she delivered an ABSOLUTELY AMAZING PERFORMANCE! This film being from the beginning announced as a lesson in courage and kindness, Cinderella should be courageous and kind - and she absolutely is!

I was really charmed by the "classical" interpretation of Cinderella character by Kenneth Branagh, unlike the recent horrible, abjectly grotesque "feminist-revisionist" visions of Alice and White Snow in respectively Tim Burton's "Alice in the Wonderland" and Rupert Sanders "White Snow and the Huntsman". Cinderella is a young girl who just wakes up to the adult life and she has all the vulnerability and charm of such a person. She is no shrinking violet though - there is actually tough, noble steel in her, but in a very feminine way it is wrapped in the warmest, softest velvet.

Great retelling of such a classic fairy tale. Lily James plays Cinderella beautifully and the folks at Disney have given this remake a sweet charming touch. The ball scene is magnificent and a great highlight of the film, for its wonderful music and mesmerizing dancing. A magical treat for fans of the story - perhaps the best live remake of the Disney animated films so far.
