Format:Audio CD
Nobody would pretend that these overtures are great music in the way some of Mozart's best are, but they are unfailingly lively (especially in these spirited performances), tuneful and, dare I say it, catchy. One is often reminded that Rossini is just around the corner historically, especially when Cimarosa employs a long lasting crescendo...which he does frequently! Cimarosa was the most popular opera composer of his day, at least in Italy. Goethe refers, in his Italian Journey, to the composer being carried through the streets of Rome by opera fanatics! On the strength of Il matrimonio segreto, and these overtures, it is easy to see why; the man was a real crowd pleaser. This leads one to wonder why more of his operas are not in the repetoire. Time is long overdue for a Cimarosa revival.

This is music that is fun to listen to, but somewhat lacking in geniality and that may explain Cimarosa's relative obscurity. Nonetheless, I ordered volume 2 of the overtures. After all, one can't listen to Beethoven, Mahler or Shostakovich all the time.
