Product Description

Cigar Aficionado magazine, known worldwide for its celebration of the good things in life, revolutionized the art and enjoyment of cigar smoking. More than one million readers turn to the magazine to learn about the worlds most enjoyable cigars, spirits, wines, beers, restaurants, resorts, collectibles, and more. In each issue, the editors evaluate a wide variety of cigars in a blind tasting format and rate them on a 100-point scale. Our previous Cigar Aficionado titles have sold a combined total of nearly half a million copies. Now Cigar Aficionado presents the ultimate resource, an easy-to-use, full-color guide with ratings and tasting notes for more than 200 fine cigars, organized by brand. For less than the price of 3 good cigars, it also explores the history and production of cigars, with expert advice on buying, storage, preparation, and smoking etiquette. With a wealth of useful information, this is an essential reference for both connoisseurs and those just beginning to appreciate the pleasures of cigars.

While the book covers a couple of section I'd break down into the only two I was interested in:
1. Recommendations for currently available cigars.
2. Background education for enhancing your cigars and cigar experience.

First the recommendations by descriptions and scoring system were pretty lame. With the descriptions a little short but the important tastes are mentioned (Earthy, woody, veggie, spicy, peppery, leathery and so on). But the scoring system (out of 100) is just a bit of a gimmick.
While taste is a personal thing their choices focused on a certain type of cigar that was not to my liking. With finite space in the book this skewed taste it limited the number of recommendations I would pass on...

Secondly the background, good and highly amusing but also clearly biased. This is the content you would buy the book for. I'm sure other books will cover this material too, I thought that this book covered it slightly better than others.

I think the book is ok, but unless you truly are an aficionado or a connoisseur buy a copy only for reference and humour, not for the cigar recommendations.

First off this book is a gorgeous publication that would grace the world's best coffee tables. The physical quality of the printed materials, its fabulous photography and easy to understand layout and content make it a joy to pick up and browse.

The main problem, as noted by the reviewer "Iain", is that the cigars that are included, and the ratings given to each reflect the bias, intentional or not, of the author.

Anyone who reads Cigar Aficionado magazine will know that its highest ratings are usually given to big cigars (48 ring gauge or more), strong or "full bodied" cigars ( mild cigars are for wimps) and preferably coming from Cuba. As my personal preference is for smaller, lighter smokes from the Dominican Republic the content of this book is of no use to me - beautiful as it is.

Come to think of it, I don't really see that the book has an audience at all. Anyone just starting out on their cigar journey would not be able to cope with the mind blowing stogies this book covers, and would be far better starting with Tad Gage's excellent introduction in the "Idiots Guide" series.

Those who love big, strong and massively expensive Habanas, probably already read Cigar Aficionado anyway - so why fork out extra just to have it shaped like a book!
