cielo e mar 2 May 2008
By Adrienne Gorman - Published on
Format: Audio CD
Listeners who like to sing along will have to learn some new material because, as he did in his French album, Rolando Villazon has included some noteworthy arias from seldom heard operas. The Maristella and Fosca selections are particularly beautiful. However, I advise against singing along because one can then appreciate this magnificent voice and expressive phrasing.

If you love a classical voice but you are not necessarily an Opera fan, any and all of Rolando Villazon's recital albums are a wonderful delight to listen to! I will not and have no intention of giving this a technical or expert review because the whole purpose of reviewing a artistic piece is to answer the single most important question: did it give you goosebumps?! Did you LOVE it? My answer is "YES!" so thats all that matters. Art is in the eyes and ears of the beholder. When something moves you visually; when something creates a visceral response when you listen to it, you have to share it. I want to share Cielo e mar. Ignore the chatter among the "experts" about this being his presurgical voice... it is his beautiful voice regardless of when it was recorded. We love the works of Mozart, Beethoven, Chopin and Verdi centuries after they wrote their masterpieces because the notes on the pages were memorable, enduring; gave us goosebumps when we heard them. Enjoy this today and fifty years from now.
Aladdin's Cave of Wonders 6 Dec. 2011

I don't know where he finds them, but yet again Rolando Villazón has gifted us with an Aladdin's cave of rare and wonderful gems - this selection is from the world of Italian opera.

All but four arias on this CD were completely unknown to me, so when it arrived, I allowed myself the luxury of sitting down and listening all the way through. The placement of tracks has been cleverly chosen as a recital to trace the contrasting colours of love - from joy to anger and despair.

In the accompanying booklet, Mr Villazón is quoted as defining the criteria for his selections in this way: "If my heart beat faster and my skin prickled - then I chose it". I have to say that as usual, his judgment is unerring. The hairs on my arms stood to attention within the first two minutes, and did not settle until long after the last beautiful notes had faded.

The recital opens with two of my favourites - the title track "Cielo e Mar" from "La Gioconda", and the divine "La Dolcissima Effigie" from "Adriana Lecouvreur", which I have loved since I first heard it in an early Plácido Domingo collection many years ago. Mr Villazón's beautiful rendition of these two arias just swept me away!

There are so many new things to love in this collection! I have to mention the powerful "Il Padre" from Ponchielli's "Il Figliuol Prodigo", and the despairing "Intenditi Con Dio" from "Fosca" by Gomes. But for me, the discovery of them all is from Pietri's "Maristella" - the exquisite "Io Conosco un Giardino". What a beautiful melody and what poetry in the lyrics! I have listened to it again and again, loving it more every time.

It is evident that Rolando Villazón has given his whole heart to this project - and for me, the result is a truly thrilling opera recital!
