I must confess that I was only vaguely aware of Mark Mulcahy and even less so of his 1980's band Miracle Legion; but he clearly has a legion of well connected friends and admirers in the music biz - hence the banding together to record this collection of his songs. And what songs they are too. Not being familiar with most of the originals may of course be an advantage since these come mostly fresh to my ears making up an exceptionally good album featuring a collection of some of my favourite artists - and some that are new discoveries. It was the staggeringly good track by The National that drew me in. It just sounds like a great National song to me - and wouldn't be out of place on any of their albums. That said there are plenty of others that are equally good. I liked the Mercury Rev that does sound somewhat different to their recent output.
So the album stands very well as a great collection. That all these songs were written by one guy is a revelation to me - and certainly will result in trying to track down not only his back catalogue, but also several of the other artists that are featured here who are not well known to me.
Highly recommended - and don't just download the tracks by people you have heard of - you will definitely miss a treat if you don't take the whole album
