Superb series! 15 Jan 2005
Format:Hardcover
I love this series and am constantly impatient for the next installment. Dobbs does a superb job of evoking the wartime climate in London in general. By deftly combining real persons with the occasional fictional character, he probes the inner thoughts of Churchill and other historical figures in a way no pure historical treatise can accomplish.

Nothing Dobbs "adds" to the story is in any way inconsistent with actual historical events. Rather, he fills in "blanks" in the historical record with "events" which must be conjecture but may have actually happened. He has an excellent knack for the dramatic with his additions and they very much cause one to pause and think about it all when the book ends. He is also quite good at dramatic conclusions to all three books in the series which have been published thus far.

His portrayal of all the "real" historical personages is excellent. These works are gripping, quick reads and sure to captivate anyone with an interest in Churchill and the WWII era.

Churchill's Hour 15 Dec 2004
Format:Hardcover
So it was all the fault of the Americans! As Churchill battled to save the country in 1941, he was also battling to save his family and on both fronts the Americans were proving to be disastrous friends. They made love not war falling into bed with Winston's daughter-in-law while vowing never to get dragged into a shooting war with the Gremans, "Churchill's Hour is extremely well written and I particularly liked the way in which Churchill's relationship with his butler, Sawyers, is drawn. Yet it is the relationship with the Americans that made the book for me. It's easy to believe that the British and Americans allies were always close, but Dobbs shows how behind the scenes they often fought like cats and dogs. I enjoyed his other two Churchill books, but this one is the best of the bunch. A cracking good read

A brilliant portrait 23 Nov 2004
Format:Hardcover
Churchill's Hour is a brilliant portrait of Britain's complex but indomitable wartime leader. It explores, as no history book can, the personal and political pressures that bore down on Churchill during the dark and lonely months of 1941. Its climax may be shocking, but it's totally believable.
