Prophet of Truth by Martin Gilbert is a very good book dealing with the period from Churchill's re-joining of the Conservative Party and becoming Chancellor of the Exchequer through his famous decade long period in the political wilderness until he is eventually brought back into government at the outbreak of war. The book itself is well-written, informative, detailed and fast-paced. The Churchill who emerges in this volume is famously back in the Conservative Party but also incredibly distrusted by them. Although he is a moderately successful Chancellor by the mid-1930s his reputation in the Conservative Party and in the country has hit rock bottom due to some of the causes that he fights for. However, by the end of the volume Churchill due to his warnings about Hitler is the most popular politician in the country but is still immensely distrusted by the Conservative Party as a whole and some of his fellow government ministers in particular. Overall, a very good book about one of the defining periods in Churchill's life.
