"chunking" - why has it gone out of fashion?The concept of cognitive "chunking" was introduced by George Miller in 1956 and has become one of the first topics taught on any cognitive psychology module. Yet there are remarkably few books about it (try "chunking" as a keyword enquiry right now). This 14-page booklet was first presented in conference, and looks at why this might be the case. It also presents some parallels between the data compression techniques used in biological information processing and those in use within the telecommunications industry,
