NECA is usually a good toy company. While they make more of mini-statues than real action figures, their sculpts have put them up there with McFarlane (well, when they did more than sports and Halo), and I get excited each year seeing what new licenses they get to work with. When they announced that they'd be making Street Fighter 4 figures, and that they'd have a lot of articulation, I couldn't wait. But when I saw Chun-Li in-person, all hope was lost. Ryu and Ken looked bad enough from the previous series, but this is going too far. Medicom almost made the perfect Chun-Li figure, if it weren't for their usual poor quality control, but NECA screwed up even worse by giving us that thing you see in the stock picture. Yes, that's exactly how it looks in real life.
First, the good. Like the other SF4 figures, Chun-Li has lots of articulation. You can get some great poses out of her, and the extra hands add to this. The paint is also fairly consistent with little bleeding. These figures are more for adult collectors, so it's good to see that they put some time into the paint like they do with the other lines. The sculpt on her legs looks great too, and I'm glad they made them beefy unlike the older Chun-Li figures that came out years ago.
Now for the rest. Look at that face! She looks like she came off the set of Planet of the Apes or something! Supposedly, all the SF4 figures are 'scanned and sculpted from the 3D models in the game'. Maybe from a early demo, sure, but from the final game? I don't think so. Chun-Li looks nothing like that in SF4, and when you look at her body, it's clear this ain't a 'scan'. She's not that stubby, and her body type just screams Sir Mix-a-Lot. It's a shame they didn't spend more time on how she looked, which is the most important part of a figure. I can only imagine how Juri and Cammy will end up if NECA continues the line.
If you don't mind getting a figure that looks like a bad cosplayer of Chun-Li, then by all means, get the figure. Otherwise, there's nothing good I can say about it aside from the articulation and paint. This just isn't her, and it's hard to believe the same guys who brought us those great Bioshock and Pirates of the Caribbean figures made...THIS.
