Book Description

The illustrated classic, complete with a new preface by Matt Groening.

Winner of three Academy Awards and numerous other prizes for his animated films, Chuck Jones is the director of scores of famous Warner Bros. cartoons and the creator of such memorable characters as the Road Runner, Wile E. Coyote, Pepé Le Pew, and Marvin Martian. In this beguiling memoir, Chuck Jones evokes the golden years of life at "Termite Terrace," the Warner Bros. studio in which he and his now-famous fellow animators conceived the cartoons that delighted millions of moviegoers throughout the world and entertain new generations of fans on television. Not a mere history, Chuck Amuck captures the antic spirit that created classic cartoons-such as Duck Dodgers in the 241/2 Century, One Froggy Evening, Duck Amuck, and What's Opera, Doc?-with some of the wittiest insights into the art of comedy since Mark Twain.

5.0 out of 5 stars A delicious glimpse into what makes Chuck tick 19 Nov. 1998
By A Customer
A brief comment on Mr. Jones' writing style: He's certainly no James Joyce. He usually falls into the use of cliches, while he overpraises the people he loves, and slurs those he doesn't.
But, then, that's what a cartoonist does.
On to the good news, now: This memoir reads more like the script of a new Looney Tunes cartoon, one about the life and times of a zany character. REALLY! Chuck's anecdotes are always hysterical, and his description of people's traits and gestures make them animated to the mind's eye. One of my favorite parts is when he recalls the birth of Daffy Duck's lisp. I won't reveal that here: Get this book now!

3.0 out of 5 stars Animaniacs! 16 July 2013

It's for animation nuts, which I'm not. Why did I buy the book? On a recommendation from a friend, so I would recommend it to animators who are interested in the practical tips of this art form.

5.0 out of 5 stars A fantastic autobiography 23 Aug. 2010
A joy to read, whether he is writing about his childhood, his work as an animator or giving an insight into the creation of the Looney Tunes. Superbly illustrated, a must for animation buffs.

5.0 out of 5 stars Chuck Amuck, Fantastic, and Enjoyable 12 April 1999
By A Customer
Chuck Jones book, Chuck Amuck, is a wonderful book. The way he uses experiences in his life and transformes them into texted is marvelous. I had the chance to meet Mr. Jones once, the way he writes in this book is the same way he actually talks. Every time I read this book it brings me back to the times that Chuck Jones described, and it makes me feel as if I am riding along with him in his journy through life.

Chuck Jones' life story, funny anecdotes about his collaborators in the cartoon factory, essays on the origins of Daffy Duck and Wile E. Coyote, scripts of some classics like "Rabbit Fire", lots and lots of drawings: what more could you ask for? -- Steve Sailer
