My attention to this book was drawn by the acknowledgments of Paula Byrne in her latest book "The Real Jane Austen". She states: "Deirdre Le Faye's extraordinarily detailed Chronology (2006) has been my constant companion". From Amazon I learned that recently a revised paperback edition has been issued for a reasonable price, so I gave it a try to have some more systematic information on Jane Austen and her family. The background for this book is given in the preface; Deirdre decided to publish her information compiled over more than 30 years of research as a chronology that could be used as a reference text by other writers, as original research takes up a great deal of time. This book is indeed a book for scholars and not for anyone just interested in Jane Austen life and works. It gives in chronological order all hard facts known with the appertaining source. Furthermore it includes family trees for the extended Austen and Knight families from the 16th till 20th century. The Bibliography only include the sources used for this book, so do not expect a complete bibliography on all books related to Jane Austen. The list of abbreviations is not exhaustive. The Index of personal names just refers to the year(s) were mentioned, but give seldom information on the person, presuming that you already have that knowledge. For a layman like me it will be helpful to have some more information included on the person and if applicable were to find him/her in the family tree.
One random example of the chronology: 1804, March 28, Wednesday: HTA/HM pay pound 5 to Jno. Maunde, and pound 50 to C. Brisbanes bill. Source: Drummonds Bank DR/427/182, fo.114. From the list of abbreviations: HTA = Henry Thomas Austen, HM not found (probably Henry Maunde). From the Index of personal names: Jno. Maunde not found (probably J.A. Maunde, 1803-05) and C. Brisbane (1804), both without any further explanation. It is definitely a reference book for scholars and less so for a layman like me.
