Product Description

Product Description

For centuries, it's been the axis of the fighting arts--an ancient temple for a select group who want to wed the power of the mind to the might of the body. And for one monk, it's the training ground for a life destined to test his limits as a man and as a warrior.

1929. China is in unrest, as the Republic falls prey to Warlords like Kahn Xin, who holds an entire province hostage to the opium trade--and destroys all who oppose him. Only the revered Wudang monks dare stand in Kahn's way in order to protect the very soul of China. Among them is the Westerner, White Crane (Golden Globe nominee David Carradine, Kung Fu), a spiritual master of the martial arts and protector of the innocent. Revenge is not in Crane's heart--until a mercenary army storms the temple and slaughters the beloved female Grandmaster Myling. Out of the ashes of the temple ruins, Crane rises--with vengeance in his heart.

Infiltrating the decadent Shanghai underworld, Crane comes upon Jane Marshall (Daryl Hannah, Kill Bill), a waylaid lounge singer from Brooklyn looking for her lost brother, Peter. She's currently the star attraction at the Double Paradise Club, where club owner and trader Bingo Quo also has a personal score to settle with Kahn. But it's Bingo's dangerous professional ties to Kahn that draw both Crane and Jane deep into the Warlord's lair. Now torn between the spiritual Wudang teaching and the cold-blooded life of an assassin, Crane is about the cross the fine line between justice and revenge.

From the awesome majesty of the Shaolin temples to the torrid neon nights of Shanghai's underground, White Crane Chronicles delivers a thrilling and enlightening adventure in action and suspense.

This 3 hour two-part TV item from 2007, which comes in widescreen but with only stereo sound unfortunately, is like a continuation of Carradine's "Kung Fu" TV series of many years ago. He essentially plays the same character with a different name, White Crane, no doubt for some legal, copyright reasons. It's some years down the line and he is now himself a Master training younger people.

Despite it having been said somewhere that Carradine was too old for the part, I must disagree. He still does some nice fighting (no doubt covered by a stand-in in view of his age and health at the time but who cares) and is still trying to root out the baddies, though this time in a form of revenge which he promised the Grand Master he would not do.

After the start action relocates to Shanghai to see Kane (sorry Crane) in a sharp suit with his long hair slicked and tied back in a ponytail, knocking back scotch in a jazzy nightclub where Daryl Hannah sings, erm, jazz and Kane then takes care of business.

If you liked the "Kung Fu" TV series then this is a must for you. Even if you don't know the series then this is a must for any Carradine or martial arts fan. You can then move back to the "Kung Fu" series.

My only criticism is that a 2007 production should have been in surround-sound as opposed to stereo but you can still rescue a bit of the effect by using the multi-channel audio setting on your DVD player and 3D on your player or flat-panel TV.

This is thoroughly recommended to anyone, especially at the give-away price of 6GBP available. Its just a damned shame that the man is no longer with us so it all ends here.

Sheer brilliance. Better than Enter the Dragon or any other 'classic', a truly intelligent and historic work of Art. As said above, a fitting tribute to Shih-fu Carradine and both his acting and love of Kung Fu: and thanks to his Teacher, Shih-fu Kam Yuen of course for his instruction and wise guidance. This two-part film is full of glorious scenes, beautiful scenery of China and top notch acting by all, and of course some great, simple and effective 'Master-level' Kung Fu without the wire-work and rubbish you get in many of the 'Flying Daggers' type genre! I suggest that readers also purchase his book 'Spirit of Shaolin' so that they may appreciate not only the man but that 'Carradine Special' dance sequence which combined his two great loves! This really has to be the No.1 in any serious collection of non-spoof Martial arts films, and then one you'll want to watch again, and again.

Ever since watching Kung Fu back in the early 70's I've loved to watch David Carridine, especially his martial arts oriented films. My mid teens were filed with the thoughs of Shaolin phiosophy and i've tried to live by its precepts ever since. I kept a note book religiously writing down all of the sayings that Master Po used to expound to Grasshopper. Those saying have stayrd with me for most of my life.

For any Kung Fu lover this is an essential addition to your movie collection. Carradine is as good in his later years as he was way back then in the early 70's (if not better. He will be sadly missed.

A very well done story in two parts. David Carradine shines in a role tailor-made for his unique talents. The production values are high and the print looked and sounded like a major feature film on our big screen TV with surround sound. He is ably supported by Daryl Hannah and a host of talented performers. So grab yourself a copy, sit back and enjoy.

Not his best, we did not get enough of him in this film but it is hard to find his films. He was never used to his full potential and I wish he had been offered films of a higher grade. Still,it is good to be able to find anything with David Carradine whom I miss a lot.
