I found this book really useful when researching for an art project which featured the Victorian era. The clear pictures are useful and give you the general gist of the fashion of the time.
The detailed colour illustrations (from Ancient Egypt to the 1980s) are extremely useful for any artists who are working on anything from the past. I can also see how it would benefit social historians.

This is a really handy overview of Western costume; equally useful for the 'just' generally interested as for the more seriously interested. The drawings are not brilliant when it comes to faces (one facial expression for women and one for men) and it lessens somewhat the total impression of quality. The dresses are drawn in equisite detail albeit somewhat sketchy but as the author says in the preface, the book 'is not intended to be an academic study'. Taking the author's intent into consideration as well as the comprehensive overview offered, I feel that on balance, the book does earn its five stars.

An excelent over view of costumes through the ages, please note I say over view, this book only privides brief details. All the costumes are presented as clear but simple illistrations, this is in some ways better than having lots of detail which can get in the way when all you want is a clear idea of how the garments looked. You also get a good idea of the sort of paterns and colours that would have been used and a few lines of text for each image. There is also an eleven page illustrated glossary in the back of the book which provids some more usful information.
