Book Description

16 Sep 1999 Swordfish Comedy S.
STOP PRESS Chronic is a hilarious work of friction from the highly original mind of legendary writer and cartoonist Chas Saunders. "Words can be butchered, bowlderised, plagiarised, pulped, abbreviated, adulterated and bifurcated. I should know as I did it all to produce Chronic, a fable of our times." Chronic is an outrageously funny novel in the tradition of Spike Milligan's Puckoon. CHARITY LAD FLEES FLYING SAUCER IN PUB BRAWL SHOCKER! Somewhere in Great Britain is a town called Zonk, a cultural wasteland populated by yobs, snobs and idiots. But behind the scenes, Zonk is a hotbed of mysterious goings-on. What is the sinister secret of Doc the tattoo artist? Who dared to challenge Arnold Plucknett's impregnable security system and scratch a rude message on his car? What is the connection between a flurry of UFO sightings and the local charity shop? What is the uneasy alliance between handsomely hypnotic Mervyn Mandrake and Reg Pratt the ex-traffic warden? READ ALL ABOUT IT! Ace reporter Lindy Linthwaite is on the case, aided by her well-meaning but utterly maladjusted team of Godfrey the snapper and Andrew the scribbler. In search of the hottest scoop, they'll discover a tangled web of intrigue and idiocy. Zonk will never be the same again. To avoid disappointment, read CHRONIC, not the blurb.

Product Description

Review

I heartily recommended the book to all lovers of literature, particularly over a pint of Badger's Ale... I was captivated by the effluence of imagination, which reminded me somewhat of Dickensian sandwich imagery in its use of semi-colons --Ambrose Bloater Reviews... Zonk Chronicle, January 2001

From the Publisher

Chronic not only contains words and punctuation. It's FULLY ILLUSTRATED with funky graphics and quirky cartoons. 174 pages of pure undiluted entertainment! Better value than a frozen hippo on a stick! (How long can we keep this up?) To avoid disappointment, read CHRONIC, not the blurb. That's the only way you can find out for yourself...

I have never been a great reader but this book is a great book to read. You can either read it all at once or (as I did) in little short lumps. There is at least one character in the book that you can easily relate to and many more that of the type of people who you know are 'just like that'. The writing style is nice and easy and the content is light and amusing (Oh and I learned a couple of new words too). I strongly reccomend buying 2. One for yourself and one as an ideal present for that person you haven't got a clue what to buy.
