I used to enjoy Robin Cook a lot, some 20 years ago; hadn't read him for a while, so picked up this one. Oh dear! I cannot stop reading it, that's true, because he still can thrill; but it is all rather flat, uninspiring, with goodies and baddies indicated by giant arrows. No subtlety, not much characterization either. And to top it all off (on the negative side - I should have given two stars, really, but cannt change it) Cook seems to think that to splice genetic data packets into bonobo chimps can make them evolve to use tools and language, and completely alter their bodily and social structure - all within months. Hmmmm... I don't think so, and what's more, I think I'll abandon reading this book, even though I have gotten through three-quarters of it.
It is a thriller allright, but a cliche-ridden, flatpack-personality, cod-science one. I don't think I'll be reading more of his recent work...
