Book Description

1 May 2004
Here is a wealth of expert advice and practical know-how, presented through a year in the gardening life of the man who was one of Britain's most famous and admired gardeners. Month by month this book displays Christopher Lloyd's unrivalled knowledge of plants – how he grew them in his celebrated garden at Great Dixter and how he designed his superlative plant combinations. This is also a book about experimentation, 'a strong element' of which Lloyd considered 'essential to the happiness of any enquiring gardener'. Laced with provocative statements to tease gardeners out of complacency, Christopher Lloyd's Gardening Year is essential reading for adventurous gardeners.

Product Description

His text is as well-observed and entertaining as ever (Stephen Anderton Times)

In this book the old master's hand is still as deft as ever, acquainting the reader with a procession of plant groups and their seasons with a style and zest that makes this as compulsive a read as any thriller (Garden)

From the Publisher

The Guardian - review by Ruth Gorb, December 3 1999
"Read CHRISTOPHER LLOYD'S GARDENING YEAR and you are in the company of a master gardener and friend. In this latest book he is, as ever, chatty, opinionated and inspirational. He disobeys all the rules and wages a long-standing battle against good taste: his combination of orange dahlias and vivid purple verbena may not be your cup of tea, but he describes it with such zest...To be in his company, even through the pages of a book, is a privilege and an education" --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

5.0 out of 5 stars Christopher Lloyd - yeah!!! 7 Feb 2009
Any book by Christopher Lloyd is beyond price. He was born with a trowel in his hand and in over 80 years of life never stopped learning about plants and gardening. His own garden at Great Dixter was his research lab and he was constantly trying out new plants, plant combinations and gardening techniques. He was a plantsman first and foremost, rather than a garden designer - but then he didn't need to design the structure of the garden at Dixter, that had been done by the great architect Lutyens in consultation with Christopher Lloyd's father.

Yes, a great gardener. But even more than that he was a prolific and talented writer with a consummate command of English. There may have been greater gardeners in the 20th century (though not many) and there were greater writers, but no-one combined the two skills to such effect as Christopher Lloyd did. Buy this book and any other by him and you will learn and be entertained in equal measure.

The star rating on this site only goes up to five. I would give any book by Christopher Lloyd at least ten.

5.0 out of 5 stars Miss you Mr Lloyd 25 July 2014

Bought this to give a friend . I have read my copy and the Adventurous Gardiner a few times. Both will give you an inferiority complex, especially if you do not start things from seed, and propagate your dahlias. A great wit. Miss him now that he is not there to tease us about "all grey" gardens. He was always developing as a gardener. Really a great Horticultural treasure.
4.0 out of 5 stars Lloyd charmed me 4 Mar 2013

Christopher Lloyd must surely have been part pixie. A charming writer who loves plants, loves gardens, respects his spot in the world and came to know it well in his lifetime. His work and his skill in writing about Dixter has helped me learn how to choose a good plant for the right place, and understand why something does or does not work.

Also Lloyd makes this writer feel OK about mistakes. He really encourages people to appreciate the plants that appeal to them, whether they fit the accepted model of what a garden should be like or not. How bold to decide that a purple smoke bush or a tree looks nice in a border and cut the sucker down every year, just so we can enjoy the young leaves shooting up each summer. How nice to read that, if I like orange, pink, and purple - then have it.
