Product Description

"A major literary essential part of his oeuvre" (Guardian)

"There is not a page that does not contain a good joke, original insight, deadly accurate description or delicious nugget of gossip... A major literary work, the diaries round off the writer both as man and artist. They are intimate and intensely personal" (Independent on Sunday)

"There is plenty to enjoy in this first volume...Isherwood's is an exemplary twentieth-century life: assured and neurotic, fearless and fretful, generous and small-minded, forgiving and remorsefully judgemental" (Financial Times)

"A pleasure to read... No word is wasted, and the casual-looking sentences create the impression that we are overhearing what is being said" (Scotsman)

"Enthralling...Isherwood...struggles with his demons in spare, luminous and merciless prose" (Benjamin Evans Sunday Telegraph)

Book Description

The first volume of Christopher Isherwood's intimate and insightful diaries.

5.0 out of 5 stars Christopher and his kind ! 25 Aug 2011
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
Very happy to get this Volume One of Isherwood's Diaries . I read a lot of his novels and enjoyed them very much . I whished to complete my library about Isherwood and have these diaries on my shelves . I intend to get the second volume later . May be it's a pity that this thick book has no photographies of the autor - and his friends - at that time of his life .

4.0 out of 5 stars Pure pleasure (almost!) 30 May 2013
Format:Kindle Edition
The only problem with this tome of Isherwood's diaries is its huge length. Hopefully, the publishers will produce an abridged version, complete with photos (lacking here) and omitting the repetitious entries, which become particularly wearying towards the end. However, I enjoyed the early sections, such as the American draft for World War Two (which I'd never really considered) and Isherwood's involvement with the Vedanta sect as it set up its first monasteries in California. His great gift is to treat everyone equally, whether they're people he meets on film sets or the Vedanta monks, and to capture them clearly in a few sentences.

5.0 out of 5 stars A great read 13 Jan 2011

For anyone that has been a fan of Isherwood's novels will love these Diaries. You see clearly where all his characters come from. He takes everything from his real life and puts it directly into his novels. His search for something more in his life is what drives these diaries. I would recommend anyone that loves his novels pick up this book, and anyone that hasn't read anything from him before should start by reading this. I've read every book Isherwood book hasvwrote. Every word he ever wrote had meaning.
