Product Description

‘This was where her dreams drifted to if she didn’t blot her nights out with drink; this was where her thoughts settled if she didn’t fill her days with chat. She remembered this tiny, remote foreign village on a molecular level and the sight of it soaked into her like water into sand, because this was where her old life had ended and her new one had begun.’Portobello – home to the world-famous street market, Notting Hill Carnival and Clem Alderton. She’s the queen of the scene, the girl everyone wants to be or be with. But beneath the morning-after makeup, Clem is keeping a secret, and when she goes too far one reckless night she endangers everything – her home, her job and even her adored brother’s love. Portofino – a place of wild beauty and old-school glamour, and where a neglected villa has been bought by a handsome stranger. He wants Clem to restore it for him and it seems like the answer to all her problems – except that Clem has been there once before and vowed, for her own protection, never to return . . .

5.0 out of 5 stars I loved this book 17 Dec 2013
By Agi
Format:Paperback
It is the first Karen Swan's book that I have read but not the last, for sure, am going to purchase her previous books because I, well, loved this one.

Just at the beginning we are introduced to Clem. Clem is a young London girl, who is always partying, changes men like her gloves and her rule for relationship is not longer as 12 weeks. She is working in her brother's company, but perhaps working is not the right word here, she's employed there. I think Karen Swan has done everything for us not liking Clem; she is spoiled, she is selfish, she doesn't think about consequences or other people. But I have warmed to Clem immediately, liked her from the very beginning. I had a feeling that we don't get the real Clem yet, that there is something that she hides and that this is the reason why she behaves in this way.
So, after Clem destroys the most expensive bike in the world, which means that she also destroys her brother's business, she is really scared and she wants to repay him. I really liked the idea that she had and could see that it's going to work. Unfortunately, life is not so easy and Tom didn't want the money, instead forced Clem to go to Portofino to work for a client.
A client, whom she met occasionally and she felt is not going to be good for her. Portofino, where something happened.

I love the idea of Portofino in a book, already since I've read "Portofino" by Frank Schaeffer and it's my dream to go there one day. So any book with P. in - yes, please.
This book is divided into two parts, one taking place in London and second in... well... Portofino. For me the parts were like two different books, I had a feeling that writing is a little different, that Clem is a little different.

5.0 out of 5 stars Emotional rollercoaster 10 Dec 2013
By Nats
Format:Kindle Edition
I really enjoyed this book. Despite not being able to relate to the heroine I still liked her and was driven to tears a few times as I felt her pain. The writing was top notch and I loved the scenes in Portofino. I laughed, I cried as I followed the heroine's journey. And if you like this, then you will definitely like the brilliant Weak at the Knees which has much more snow in it than Christmas at Claridges!

2.0 out of 5 stars Hmm? 24 April 2014
By Jodie
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
I brought this as it was coming up to Christmas and I really wanted to read a Christmassy book, I got half was through and got fed up of it being absolutely nothing to do with Christmas. I have no idea if towards the end it becomes more festive, I lost interest.

2.0 out of 5 stars Boring 5 Jan 2014
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
I've read quite a lot of Karin Swan's books, but this one is a total bore. First of all it has nothing to do with Christmas or Claridge's, that was just a clever move by the editors. The heroin is a twentysomething with a spoilt attitude and no goal in life. She just parties. She falls in love with an equally boring man whose looks are too good to be true. Then there are these ENDLESS descriptions of stuff that is too boring to remember (a lot of it has to do with clothes and interior design). Half of the book could have been deleted in the editor's room. If you consider buying a Karen Swan, then certainly do so, but stay away from this one.

3.0 out of 5 stars Not Christmassy - but a good read. 17 Dec 2013
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
I enjoyed this book, but the title is incredibly misleading the first 487 out of 502 pages are not set at Christmas.

I would read another Karen Swan book though, she writes a good book.

5.0 out of 5 stars A real addictive, escapist treat! 5 Dec 2013
Format:Paperback
I loved this book. It's got original, 3 dimensional, intriguing characters, a great plot and glamour and sass appeal in spades. You make a massive journey with the central character, Clem, and I defy you not to love her by the end. There's a great mystery in the story as well, which keeps you guessing all the way through. All in all, it's a very satisfying read and I laughed, cried, played detective and got rather jealous of clem's wardrobe all the way through.
