Product Description

The Season's Greetings have a complex palimpsest of meanings and references. The Mass of Christ and the Celebration of Mammon. Jolly wholesome Western secular songs and strange Northern European folk melodies. Mindless pop and holy piety. Santa Claus, a Toby Jug, a turkey, a pine tree, a solstice, a renewal and gift giving. Sit back with a glass of something cheering and enjoy this album as a backdrop to your festivities, the ukulele soundtrack to a traditional xmas with all it's contradictions. Merry Christmas from the UOGB. Wotcher (What Cheer!). Tracks: 1. Sleigh Ride (live), 2. Blue Christmas, 3. Down in Yon Forest/Canticle, 4. Merry Xmas Everybody (live), 5. Wassail Canticle, 6. Christmas Rose/Canticle, 7. The Christmas Song (live), 8. White Christmas, 9. On Christmas Night/Canticle, 10. Winter Wonderland (live), 11. Jingle Bells/Canticle, 12. Wenceslas/Canticle

If you want a Christmas album with a difference. Christmas songs, both secular and religious, done in the UOGB's inimitable style.

There's a nice range of genres and tempos, from Elvis's Blue Christmas, to traditional Wassailing tunes, to modern takes on old favourites. To this day I cannot decide whether I like Jonty Bank's version of "Merry Xmas Everybody", or Dave Suich's alternative take on "The Christmas Song" ("Rudolph roasting on an open fire...") more. Both are frankly amazing!

My only real criticism is with the "Down in Yon Forest" canticle. This is probably the weak point of the album. It doesn't seem to fit with any of the other tracks, although it has to be said that ukuleles do capture that medieval flavour excellently. This is why I've dropped a star, because I cannot fault any of the other tracks.

Unlike many of the Uke's other albums, more of this seems to be studio recorded rather than live, so you drop some of the banter. But really, it doesn't matter a jot.

It should tell you something that, although I am rather apathetic about Christmas in general (with a big helping on Humbug on the side!), I was still playing this album almost constantly until about a week ago (and it's now February). The music on the album is really a joy to listen to.

What a brilliant Christmas present as it is so unusual and, simply, great music to listen to. I would recommend to anyone that they should give The Ukulele Orchestra a listen.

Wonderful with more than a hint of the third man theme cross-fertilised with
ancient chants and harmonies,
The more modernish stuff is ok too

I saw the Ukele orchestra of Great Britaimn in concert and I can't wait to see them again. i thought I was going to be bored but they really were sensational. I bought this to keep me entertained until the next concert and I certainly wasn't disappointed.
